Help Epic 4G Touch restarting itself randomly.

Hi all. Last week my phone began exhibiting a strange behavior where it will re-boot/ restart itself randomly. For example it will be just sitting on the table or be in my pocket or next to me in the car and I'll hear the start up sound and sure enough it's just restarted for no known reason. Any ideas why it might be doing this? I'm also noticing that it's very hard to get navigation apps to work at times (sometimes restarting helps, sometimes it doesn't) and that I'm not able to receive most picture messages. Has anybody had any experience with this? Do I have a faulty device?

FYI - it hasn't been dropped, wet, left in an extremely hot/ cold/ damp environment or incurred any other damage. I've owned it for just under a month.

Ps. I'm not assuming that the above 'symptoms' are necessarily related. Just interested if anybody has experienced anything similar and any info on what the cause might be.

Having the same problem. It will just be sitting on a table, and I hear it restarting for no reason. Happens at least twice a week now ???

Mine does it a few times a day. I guess I'm going to call Virgin and see what they can do. I just thought I'd ask here in case it was something anybody knew about. I prefer to be well armed with info before I get bounced around by the customer 'service' people. I'll post on this thread as soon as I find anything out.

How old is your phone cman609?

Hey mattsd

A normal cause of this is battery inflation. Have you tried spinning your battery on a smooth, flat surface? If it spins with little resistance, it means your battery is inflated and you should get it replaced.

Hi, iTzKPanda. I just tried what you suggested and the battery appears to be completely flat. Doesn't want to spin much at all on a smooth surface. I've googled it extensively and it seems to be a fairly common problem that nobody has really gotten to the bottom of yet. I read several instances where people had their batteries and phones replaced and the problem persisted.

I see. If that's the issue, I only know a couple other things:
1. If you have any apps you installed prior to the problem occuring, you might want to uninstall them.
2. A factory reset might help

Honestly, I'm not one of those people that has many apps on my phone but I will try to uninstall things and see what happens. Is it a case of uninstall/ reinstall or just leave it completely off the phone? Will a factory reset wipe all the data on the phone? Just trying to figure out if I should back up before I try that method.

You should first try to uninstall any recent app(s) prior to your problem and leave them uninstalled. If that doesn't fix anything, then you can try the hard reset.

The reset does wipe everything from your phone so backing up your files to your computer or something would be recommend.

I've seen random reboot issues fixed on other phones by underclocking the CPU and/or changing the governor. Might be worth a shot. Have you tried looking at the log files to narrow down the cause?

Ok, I can try to do that for sure. Thanks again for the help.

I haven't looked at any log files or anything. I'm pretty new to the phone and the android OS so I'm still learning all this stuff. I'll poke around for some info on that now. Thanks!

After poking around with my phone and looking for some info online, I'm not 100% sure I understand how to view any logs or other info after my phone reboots. Can someone point me in the right direction?
