After doing a little research, everything seems to point towards this error occurring because of data connection via 3g or wireless. And the reason for this error could be network pipelines or very high volume of traffic been affected from natural causes i.e earthquake. May not be near you but may be near where your network pipelines may run. I posted some links from other forums of what people have said in regards to the same problem.
However it seems to be more of a problem with data connection then actually the phone. You can ring maybe your carrier and see if they have any issues with networks being down. See how you go.
