Root Error 8704: Fatal Error.

So last night I kept receiving a notification about a Kyocera Firmware update. My phone tried to download the update and got stuck at 9%. Funny enough, my battery was also at 9%. I cancelled the update, plugged in, tried to update again, and was told my phone needed at least 50% battery. I went to bed and tried the update again this morning. It stuck at 27%. I rebooted and tried one last time, which took thirty-ish minutes to download. After it downloaded I let it do its thing and was told my phone would reboot. I said sure. My phone rebooted and started up with a picture of the Android character coming out of a box. The status bar started working away, made it about halfway and then my screen went black with dreadful, white lettering:
Error 8704:

Fatal Error. Service required. Please contact your service provider.

Holding the power button eventually let my phone reboot only to come back with the same screen. And now I have to pull the battery to turn it off and holding power doesn't reboot. It will show the Hydro logo just before the error but no Boost logo.

One of two things possibly went wrong here. I've got Widgetsoid installed as a system app in order to one-click toggle my GPS. Either that jacked it up or the update jacked up itself.

So what do I do now? I was looking for a recovery, hoping I could wipe the files and start from scratch using my computer. Another thread had two files that are supposed to be recovery.img and boot.img but I haven't checked them yet. If anybody has a guide or suggestions on how to fix this I'm all ears. I'd rather not send this in if I can get away with it because I need my phone sooner rather than later. I have no other phone line. :(

Oh, and tried getting to the "recovery menu" by holding volume down and power but no luck. Tried leaving the battery out of it for a while and tried again. No luck.

I don't think the "Home" key has any significance but I tried it anyway. No luck. Apparently my phone committed firmware update suicide. I've contacted Boost who then sent me to Kyocera. Kyocera says they'll repair or replace it but I need a proof of purchase to send it in. So I contacted Boost again since I ordered online through them and they are referring me to Bright Point Sales. Wish me luck on getting a copy of my invoice. I guess the moral of the story is to always have receipts on hand and to not run a firmware update when you have shoddy reception.

Literally I only bought this phone for ICS. And considering it was 50$ at best buy I shouldn't really bitch...

How the hell did you put out a phone that you cant put CM on.
Seriousness.

Slayer- good to see someone in my zipcode on here

I was able to get into stock recovery by holding power + volume down + home key from power off... Once in recovery a wipe data/factory reset should do the trick... Hope this helps... :D

this happened to me too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
tryed to factory format with the above method and got nothing.
finally said f*** it, and reported mine "lost".
just got my new one, rooted it, and all is back up and running again.
useing it tethered to my laptop to write this now.
so if you have insurence on your phone, "USE IT" lol.got a new one for 25$ in one day, can't beat that.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one who got screwed over. Did you do anything in particular to your phone that you think locked it up? No insurance on my phone, unfortunately. It's $5 a month, right?

I'm still trying to get mine sent in for repairs/replacement. I found the barcode from the box, which I cut out, but couldn't find a receipt anywhere. :S Then BrightPoint couldn't find my invoice to send me a copy. I gave up and ordered Boost's Samsung Galaxy S2. And then I figured out my Hydro order was on a different card so after getting ahold of BrightPoint again my invoice is on its way to me in the mail. I'm saving every damn receipt/invoice/shipping confirmation for my S2. If I get my Hydro fixed I'll have to put my wife on it. :) I never had any problems with it until the fatal error.

The home key does have significance, it won't go into Stock Recovery without holding it and vol down + power...

Both the Boost and Kyocera reps I was on the phone with for around twenty minutes a piece never mentioned anything about using the home key to get into recovery when they were walking me through the process. Regardless, my phone is still a paperweight.

Home key has no boot time function on the hydro, dont know why he is saying that.

if you got the failed update error, 8704, unfortunately the update went so bad that the recovery is screwed and only a factory reload will fix it.
Shame we cant at least get a factory reload tool.

Since i had replacement, i took it to the boost store and made them give me a new one.
I also made them update it before i left, they bricked 2 phones.
Think the updater needs a CRC check or something put in it

Great... So if I do get it fixed I'm likely to jack it up a few more times trying to update it? If I have to pay to ship it back in again and again I'm gonna be a little pissed. And did I mention how much I love being on the phone with someone I can't understand from "support?" ;) Maybe I'll just sell it when I get it back to avoid any more headaches.

If you mail it in to Kyo, they will send it back updated, asked them when i talked to them.
then all you do is put your google account back in, and run through the playstore in the my apps list.
Then of course any other extras you'd like, rerooting etc..

Good to know. Thanks!
