This worked for me to fix this problem: "error checking for updates on Google Play...

You should find the following set to On..."Settings>Accounts>Automatically sync data". Click to turn it off. Then click it again to turn it back On. Done!

One thing to try if restarting your phone doesn't help, is to clear data of play store. To do that, go to settings/apps/play store/storage/clear data.
