Help Error when trying to format my SD card with Mac

I can't sync my phone with my Mac. When I try to format my SD card in disk utility for FAT I get the following error:

Disk Erase failed

Disk erase failed with the error:
input/output error

The card was working when it was hooked-up to a PC. I have nothing on it so I am not concerned about losing anything. I just wanat my Leopard laptop to work with my phone.

Any suggestions so that I can format the card would be appreciated.

Try formatting it with the phone. Stick it in the phone, go to settings, sd card, and unmount it and format it this way.

I was able to format the card but my Mac will still not recognize the phone.

I think on mac and linux the phone has to be in Debug mode.
Go to Settings, Applications, Development, and check the USB Debug.
