Help escape OTA with Android 5.0.2

How do I keep especially Google from sticking me with OTA updates I don't want? I'm using a Cricket ZTE with 5.0.2 and don't know when I can get another phone. It's not rooted.
 
Google never sticks anyone with OTA updates. It's very probably your carrier, Cricket doing it. It's something that can happen with branded, customized and subsidized phones AFAIK, forced OTA updates. And no way to refuse them, not without rooting.
