Help Everything Google except GMail works

Scootie

Lurker
Just got the new phone yesterday, and so far I've been pretty happy with it. Upgraded from an aging iPhone 3G.

I signed my GMail app into my GMail account. Not much goes to my GMail, but I'm in the process of trying to transition all my stuff from Yahoo Mail to go to Gmail instead. The phone loaded some older emails just fine, I wasn't expecting anything new, so I thought everything was great.

Today, it simply won't log in to GMail ("Log in failed"). It will log in to Market, and everything else Google-related just fine. It just won't take my password for the GMail app ("Unauthorized"). So I re-entered it. Nope. Re-entered my password while logging into GMail on the web on the computer. Works just fine. Tried to set up Google's 2-step verification. Works fine for Outlook. Doesn't do diddly squat for the phone, it won't accept the new password either. Everything else Google on the phone, again, still works just fine (without even putting in the new password).

What in the world am I doing wrong? I'm not a complete techno newb by any means. I just can't figure out why a phone with "Google" all over the box seems so darn hard to set up GMail on. :( I don't have time to go back to the Verizon kiosk for the rest of the week, let alone sit and wait for tech support.

As a side note, setting up my Yahoo mail was odd, too. It wouldn't work by telling the phone it was a Yahoo account when given the option while setting it up. I had to delete the account on the phone and start over just calling it an "other." But the phone does seem to recognize it as a Yahoo account, and it works just fine.

Not sure if this will work, but it's worth a try.

First, go to menu>settings>accounts and sync. Look for a sign in for Gmail and if you find one, delete/remove it.

Second, go to menu>settings>applications>manage applications>all. Scroll down to find the Gmail app and click it. (If the storage information starts flickering all crazy like, simply back out, wait a few seconds and try again. This is a known issue.) Now, click "Clear Cache" and "Clear Data" to remove all traces of your account from the app.

Finally, hit your home button and then open the Gmail app again. It should ask you to allow Gmail to use your accound credentials.

If this doesn't work, let us know and we can try something else.
