Help Everything keeps crashing

I've had my Captivate for over a year now and I'll say that unfortunately, from month 3 onward there was always something strange going on w/it; from shutting down on its own to taking forever to scan data on my sd card. Recently I've been getting these annoying "low space" indicators that appear as a red-colored sd card icon on the top of the screen and so today I tried clearing the browser's cache data and deleting old e-mails to make some room. I got a little carried away and also cleared "level 1" RAM in the process. Now I have no clue what's going on but it seems every single application I try to open keeps crashing on me. I'm not very tech savvy so how can I fix this? Is it possible w/o having to do a factory reset?

I know you don't want to do one, but I really think you should just try a factory reset. If the problem continues after that, you probably have a defective phone.
