Help EVO only boots to white 4G screen

I am looking at a friend's EVO.
She said it turned off by itself last night and now it will only boot to the initial white screen with "htc EVO 4G" on it.
This is a completely stock, non-rooted phone.
I do not have any experience directly with the EVO but do with the D1 on Verizon.
Can someone point me in the right direction?
I'm thinking if it loads the first screen it is still alive and just needs some help.

EDIT: I did just now get it to go into the hboot screen connected USB and my PC wants to load drivers. Another good sign.
Found RECOVERY in the bootloader screen and it looks like things are working.

Looks like I jumped the gun on this post.
Recovery seems to have fixed the system.
I think the underlying problem is a bad battery.
Her's would not even charge with the phone turned off it was so low.
Fortunately, her husband also has an EVO and doing a battery swap I got her phone booted and running. Took forever to get his phone booted with the 'bad' battery and even now, it's been on the wall charger for 30+ minutes and still reads <2%.

New battery time...
