Evo or STI?

TJGoSurf

I'm looking for a new car. I live in Colorado so I would like an awd. I've not kept up with all the different changes over the years and I don't even know if there is any other decent options.

Opinions?

Brand new, I'd say Evo too. I dislike the Subaru hatchback styles, or any other designs since the first few, 06-now I think, just imo. But if your going used a few years old, like 05, I'd buy the sti sedan (pre hatchback facelift) over an 05 evo 8 like the red one in Tokyo Drift(1st US version/release), they weren't that good (evo). They were heavily stripped down (both body and motor) from what other countries saw. They had numerous issues, as most "new" cars do, but are known for complete engine failure. If you look to buy one used, you'll find a bunch with replaced or rebuilt motors. Also, truth be told, more "kid racers" bought and beat these cars than an sti, for performance/street racing. They were built to attract 18-25yr olds. While also true of STI and WRXs, more adults and families bought a Subaru and cared for them than the original Evo. Plus Subaru USA had more things fixed and bugs worked out by this time. Both cars were fairly even performance wise. I've owned both. I like the looks of an Evo 8 better than the new 10s, but I'd never buy another 8... I'd buy the STi hatchback before I bought another one, or certainly an evo 10 despite its looks. The evo x is a mean car, so if your going new I wouldn't hesitate on buying one. The STi is still a very nice car and can be done well, no complaints or questions about it, but imo again, the current evo vs sti battle is currently being won by Mitsubishi. Especially if you can get your hands on one of the special editions. I know in 05 the one I had was an MR, not sure if its still an edition offered or if there's another better option.

Basically, it all comes down to you. What you like. How you drive. What you want to do to the car, or with it. Just do your research or pick the one you can't live without, take a few test drives, and you won't ever go wrong because you'll be the one enjoying it or hating it when your in it every day.

Don't get too caught up in other people's opinions, especially on cars. Lambo vs Ferrari, Triumph vs MG, Ford vs Chevy vs Dodge, etc. Someone will always have a different opinion no matter what you like and no matter what you buy. I'm a Toyota Supra guy. I've had 22 of them, I've NEVER not had one for more than a month since I was 17. Even owning them, they are still my dream car. I know it won't beat supercars, I know a lot of newer cars sold for $35k today might smoke me all around right off the lot (if mine weren't tuned & built ;) ), but put a 94 Toyota Supra w/190k miles on it, and a brand new Lamborghini Aventador with 0 miles in front of me, tell me to pick the only car I can ever drive again, and ill take my Supra, all day every day, no regrets.

I'm doing what will make and keep me happy, I don't care how bat sh*t crazy people may think I am, or if people look at me and laugh at a stop light in 2037.

Good luck, let us know what your thinking, what you like, and of course what you end up with... and enjoy.

I personally dislike the body styling of the Evo but the new STI's don't look too bad. If you're into modding I know the Evo has a huge market but I'm unsure of the market for the STI. From my understanding though, the Evo has a lot of transmission issues but I have a friend with an STI who is always replacing little things. It's all down to personal preference and what you can afford and if you're buying brand new, you always have a factory warranty to fall back on, granted you don't have anything aftermarket on the car. That is my experience though as I almost got turned away for a transmission replacement due to an upper charge pipe on my Cobalt SS.

Yeah, good point. Not sure what your finances are like, or your intention with the car. Buying used with cash, buying new with cash, financing new/used, etc, and its none of my business. But if your gonna buy used with cash and want to mod, either buy something unmolested from a family or older owner, or buy something with a blown motor dirt cheap, and build it the way you want to. If your just looking for a daily driver, no real modifications, then I guess my suggestions are the same, buy something that was well cared for, or new. IMHO, and while not always true, avoid the temptation to buy a "great priced" used car with an exhaust, intake, blow off valve, turbo timer, boost controller, etc... no matter how much the person selling it to you says it's never been beat on... 99% chance it definitely was. I've made that mistake a few times, and you end up buying someone else's basket case and problems. In your head looking at it, your like, awesome, it already has an exhaust and that saves me $1200 out of my pocket... maybe true, but it won't save you from a motor rebuild because the kid had a habit of over revving the engine at every stop light. I had a 91 Talon TSi awd, I bought it for like $800 with a blown motor. After putting a rebuilt motor in it, and even buying all the extra parts I wanted, I was only $4000 into a basically new car that I loved, was fast as hell, and I knew it top to bottom. Thing was AWD, turbo, great year round daily driver. And this was in like 1999, used prices on a running one was still like 5-6k, so I was actually in a much better car mechanically and financially then buying one out of an auto trader.

Also, lots of vehicles offer awd now. Have you looked into others. Just because its not on this weeks episode of Top Gear, or Fast and Furious 47, doesn't mean it won't have the things you want, or won't perform the way you'd like it too. You could be greatly surprised by vehicles you didn't really think of before. That new Hyundai Genesis 4door has a v8 option with more power than a Mustang V8. The new Scion frs/Subaru brz, while only rwd, is like the best thing out right now, how badly do you need awd? I live in Worcester Ma, so I know the weather well too, but how often are you going to actually be driving in 3ft of snow? BMW has had AWD for a while. Audi is great for the cross between, speed/performance and luxury. Even a 300c or Chargers, can be dirt cheap used but are awd with luxury and lots of room. An RT will definitely keep ya up to speed. The new Kia is luxurious beyond belief. Its like $80k, but people are actually buying them to be driven/chauffeured around in, no joke, even over their Rolls Royce. (Not a joke either, check out Kias website). Just saying, keep your eyes and options wide open until you can honestly limit your options down to a couple cars. Then, focus on the ones you can't live without. Too many people buy off impulse or what is popular at the moment.

Also, look ahead a year or two. See a concept car that you LOVE, and is going to be made into full production? Are you going to buy a Evo X now, only to want to trade it in for the new sti or evo xi in 6 months? Be sure. People often do this and end up under water on their cars value and pay through the nose to have the next best thing, rather than wait 90 days. Happens with smartphones daily. How many of you have the iPhone 5 and are wanting or about to buy the 5s. Or galaxy 4, waiting for the 5 announcements? Exactly. I've dine it too many times, only to want to kick my own ass.

Again, just do your research on what cars you want, when your SURE you know what they are. Join dedicated forums for them. Learn the issues with them and what to look for. Sometimes those forums are also where tou can find the best deals, and looking through the owners post, you can basically see what has been done to car. Maintenance, mechanics, mods, replacement items, warranty things, recall items, if its been raced and where, see if he's an actual enthusiast and cares about the car, or is it his weekend warrior. It can have better history than a carfox... I mean, carfax, lol.

I've been looking around. I will say buying a used evo or sti is overpriced.

I think I will look for a decent dsm or fd rx 7. While I love the features of a newer car I do miss the pure feeling of a car without all the electronic safety features.

Just some cars I've owned:
1966 Mustang Fastback
1972 Nova SS
1992 Eagle Talon TSi
1996 Eclipse GSR
1991 RX-7

I think pricing on a good WRX would be better than a EVO or STI. Odds are better at finding a clean WRX than either of the others and if you find a clean one of them they want too much still. WRX can sounds just as good as an STI to me.

The Subaru, especially STI, culture is pretty good. Can't say I've met too many cool Evo guys. That or they just hated my STI.

I've met a couple that were cool, but only until they meet somebody with an Evo. Around here, most STI drivers are extremely dangerous on the road.

Honestly I’m not a big fan of either but between these two EVO has more potential and would be my choice. Evo can make a lot more power than Sti with the same mods/ money spent.
