Help EVO to PC USB connection stopped working

jeeptrekker

Newbie
For the past few months, my unrooted Sprint Evo 4G with version 2.3.5. has had hit or miss success with connecting to my Windows 7 PC via USB as a disk drive. Eventually, my EVO stopped showing up as a drive on the PC completely. Sometimes I get a "USB device not recognized/ has malfuntioned" error message, and sometimes the PC does not respond at all.

I have tried:
1. Cycling the phone/PC power
2. Toggling USB debugging on/off
3. Toggling Fast Boot on/off
4. Toggling between mounting as a disk drive and as "charge only" (which is the mode that previously allowed me to USB connect via PDAnet)
5. Installing HTC Sync on my PC (as instructed by the 2.3.5 rooting guide, although this isn't a rooting question yet), updating it to the latest version, having HTC Sync on the PC end say that my device is not connected... and having the HTC Sync "USB connection mode" screen on my EVO say that it cannot locate HTC Sync on my PC either
5. Retrying each of the above methods using various USB ports on my PC
6. Retrying each of the above methods on my secondary Windows Vista PC

Any other suggestions to get my USB connection working again? Or, at the risk of getting kicking out of here and onto the Root forum, is there a workaround so that I can root my phone without a PC connection? Perhaps the rooting process will fix all of this anyway.

I would try a different cable. maybe your cable is going bad. Do you ever have any issues with it charging? Like will it cut in and out during charging?

That was the problem, thanks! Charging was always consistent, but swapping out the cables re-enabled my PC to see my EVO as a drive and use PDANet again.

The newly installed (and updated) HTC Sync on my EVO and my PC are still not recognizing each other, but I only installed that as prerequisite to the rooting process anyway. Rooting may have to wait until I get HTC Sync working... but I'll eventually post in the rooting forum if I can't figure that one out.

Sweet! Glad it worked for you.
