This guide is written assuming you have previous android experience and just need a quick catchup to get started with this phone.
Here is the current status on our phones overall progress.

All sense based roms are pretty much 100% stable, Harmonia, Mobster, Viper, and Midnight rom, and others.
CM9 and CM10 are both about on par, CM10 has way more attention and has official support coming.(I think it already happened)
2d front and rear camera works (video and photos), panoramic mode is still glitchy, but 4.2 camera's photosphere works.
As CM9 and 10 are not built for the virgin mobile version specifically MMS is broken. Using goSMS with a custom apn setting works. WiMax is hit and miss depending on the build, but expect it to be fixed across the board down the road. Video playback is starting to work too without mxPlayer.
If it is Paranoid Android or MIUI you are after lens_flare has some great builds to try for both. Agrabrens Disarmed Toaster has a Paranoid option as well, but is currently kinda broken.
As far as kernels go you have a bucketload of choices, mobsters power kernel, anthrax kernel, butteredtoast kernel, mac kernel, coolexe kernel, and possibly more I've forgotten. The two most mentioned ones I see is buttered toast and anthrax. anthrax kernels require signup on anthrax-kernels.us (as kernels can be touchy round these parts i will never blue link these)
As far as recoveries go get 4ext recovery. Its boss.

If you just wanna know what the best rom is you are gonna be out of luck. most roms are already at daily driver status so you just gotta have fun and pick n' choose.
As far as 3D goes in anything other than stock sense based, its not happening till someone makes a 3d camera app from scratch, and video wont happen without switching on sbs 3d via an app. ( jmz's evo 3d switcher just needs one more button.)
and thats about it, I hope this guide can reduce the amount of questions that we may get after a flood of xmas shoppers get evo v's this year. either that or the guide will go to page 18 to die. If people like it I will expand it tho.
