Help Evo WiFi Tether Speeds over 4G barely 3G Speed

SOLIDAge

Lurker
are HORRIBLE.

I first tried using the Sprint App and paid $30 a month for access to do so and i was getting speeds of about 200kbps...
I have since rooted thinking their app was garbage and have tried using WiFi Tether and sometimes peak at 2.4mbps but it's never anywhere NEAR the 5Megs that I get when I do a speed test right on the phone w/o tethering.

Infact if I turn off my 4G and use Barnacle WiFi Tether it's almost consistantly 1.5Megs!

Is there a custom rom that has Native WiFi Tethering built in? is my Evo Busted? i have seen a few other threads about this online but I'd like to be able to use my phone as a 4G Hotspot like it's advertised as being able to do.
Thanks.

To be honest with you, 2.4 Mb/s is pretty fast. I really haven't heard of many people getting it a lot faster than that. You're welcome to try different versions, though, if you haven't already. You can get them here:

Downloads - android-wifi-tether - Project Hosting on Google Code

I remember some people had better luck with 2.05 pre 7 (or maybe it was 9?). To be honest though, I don't think you're going to get much better results. Keep in mind that speed test sites/apps really aren't going to reflect real world conditions.

right.

I've also tried using slingbox and I wouldn't mind if it wasn't the best quality...but the problem is that it barely works. I can look at the WiFi Tether app and see it go between 2.5mbs and 300kbps in a blink of an eye and it causes juddering and picture freezing.

1. I have to agree with akazabam on this one. 2.4 mb/s is pretty standard from what I have heard. Any time you are using wireless tethering you are more likely to get lower speeds than using the app directly on your phone.

2. There are many short comings with speed testing programs which contain A LOT of variablility. You can try different servers and possibly get different results. What it really comes down to, though, is the real world experience. And as akazabam mentioned, I recommend trying pre9 or pre11 and then using the tweak I mention in my post linked above.

3. (edit) So how are you testing your speed? Are you just looking at the wireless tether app to see what it says on the app itself?

ya. I mainly want to use my iPad so i've tested it numerous ways. One is I've connected it and done the speed test which i realize might not be the best way so I've done some "real tests"

download an App on itunes and watch the Evo's read out for speed...
or I'll load up my slingbox application on the iPad and see what the quality looks like and what the speed read out on the Evo is.

it's just really disheartening. I saw someone today w/ a Clear account and an embedded broadband card get 10 megs down CONSISTENTLY while I can pull 5megs on the EVO but once it tethers, it's down to 2 or 2.5
