Help Except chrome all browsers are denied

Hi I have a Moto G running Lollipop.

Suddenly I have started to get a message "Except chrome all browsers are denied" and loads of tabs open in Chrome. I have searched for this on the web but not found anything.

I have run Avira & Malwarebytes but nothing has been found.

Also, it seems that dozens of tabs get opened. I copied an URL into a sandboxed browser on my PC & it appeared to be Google's search page.

I can't uninstall Chrome so not sure what to do. A factory reset is a bit of a way down my preferred options but is looking like the only solution as I can't find anything like this on the web.

You may be able to start with clearing data and cache for Chrome. Manage Apps | All | Chrome and clear it in there.
 
Same problem on galaxy note 2, startedo last night. Cleared cache, cleared data, ran lookout security and CCleaner - no change.
It doesn't happen in safe mode.
Internet search only found one result - this one.
I'm on vacation with limited resources.
 
same, from today july 30, galaxy s4, lollipop 5.01

i am starting by suspecting Android System WebView but with little evidence so far.
 
After looking further chrome last updated july 29 - the same time as the problem started on mine. Can't Uninstall chrome without root and uninstalling updates didn't help but disabling chrome worked.
(running kitkat btw)
 
Started for me today... this was the only post I've been able to find. I do not get how they can force you to use chrome only. Specifically for those that purchased apps that have browsers.
I cleared cache, data - even uninstalled updates and restarted. Same issue: "Except Chrome, all browsers are denied"
Followed the above advice and Disabled Chrome.

I hope they get this fixed. I like using Chrome - but I do not want to be forced to use only Chrome
