Help Excessive data demands

Ozhatch

Lurker
I just upgraded my 2-year old Galaxy Sll to Galaxy S4. In the week since I got the new phone I've had an alert from my ISP that my home wi-fi usage has reached 50% of my 10gb data allowance. I notice that my phone is constantly downloading updates, mostly for apps that came pre-loaded, and that I'm hardly ever likely to require.
I've tried to disable some of these apps, but that doesn't seem possible.
Please can someone offer some assitance? I'm not all that tech-savvy, and I'd prefer not to try rooting my new phone (or any other phone, for that matter!)

1. Neither your carrier nor your ISP has any way of knowing what your wifi usage is, so I'd just ignore the "alert."

2. If the apps are coming from the Google Play store, go into its settings and under Auto-update apps, select "Do not auto-update apps." Additionally, you may or may not wish to check the box for "Notifications." Even if you leave it unchecked, you can check manually for updates by pressing the Play Store icon in the upper-left, and then My apps. Apps with updates available will appear at the top of the list under INSTALLED.

Thanks for your response. I have done as you suggested, and changed the settings.
As for the wi-fi usage, I've set the phone to download apps only when connected to wi-fi. Although I seldom reach the 10gb, I have had my speed reduced by my ISP in the past.
