Exchange a phone received as a gift?

A friend bought her daughter a phone, the phone is in the daughter's name and she wants to exchange it. It was just bought today.

She was told that the purchaser (her mom) must be present with her when she exchanges it, is there any truth to this?

PS the daughter is 37 and not a kid, in case someone asks. :)

Depends on where she bought it and the policy of the store. If she has the receipt then they should exchange it but again goes back to the policy. If a receipt is had then you should just exchange it and tell them I did buy it prove different.
