Exchange mail sync causes massive data usage...anyone else experiencing it?

Hello to all wise android users.

I have encountered a serious issue with Android (4.1.1) stock email app when syncing with our Exchange server. The server is working fine with PC, laptop and even a trial version of Touchdown on my device.

Stock apps for mail, calendar, tasks and contacts work fine for a period of time (anything from 2 days to 2 weeks, but rarely longer) and then mail syncing seems to get 'stuck'. The syncing of mail runs continuously and if not stopped will chew through my 4Gb monthy data (and more) as fast as it can. On more than one occassion I have ended up with punitive data usage costs.

I have tried unchecking the mail sync and leave contacts, calendar etc to run and all returns to normal ...except I have no mail. Mail continues to sync fine on other devices.

The work around is to remove the account altogether, re-install and re-sync when on WiFi connection.

Have tried Touchdown (don't like this) and Moxier (currently testing) but would prefer stock app since it is also collecting mail from two POP accounts and prefer all together.

There have been other posts regarding large data usage but can't find anything directly related to this issue.

has anyone else experienced the same?

Your comments, suggestions and feedback much appreciated.
