excluding audio from music player

I have read about the ".nomedia" trick before. However, I am really quite surprised that I haven't found another solution. Is there a way to specify the S5 music app to only pull from a specific folder on my device?

Open the built-in Music app. In the top line, tap Folders. Then, all music folders will be there. Open your wanted folder and tap one song to play.

If I turn on shuffle will it only shuffle from that folder as well? And can it utilize genres or from that folder also?
