export to SD card

I have a Samsung Galaxy Y 3.3.6 mobile phone & trying to get used to everything. Sorry if I sound dumb but I'm new to this phone.

I would like to know if I choose "export contacts to SD card", will they be deleted from my sim card?. I just want to have a back up of my contacts on my SD card. I don't want to erase them from sim card.

Also,I have a spare SD card that I would like to put everything on as well in case I lose the phone, so if I connect the phone to my computer and transfer everything on to the computer, can I then put it on the spare SD card?, but I would like my contacts on both SD cards and when I connect the phone to computer I can't see anything about my contacts there, just photos, music and so on.

I really should buy an SD card with more gigabytes and I see one online, does it matter what type, or are all SD cardss the same except for size.

Many thanks for any help.

Correct: exporting them means they are copied to the SDcard. They will still be on the SIMcard too.

Yes.

You can leave a copy (a.k.a. data dump) on your computer as backup set. E.g. monthly. No matter whether you can read all those file there. They are only 'parked' there for safekeeping. What IS important is that you can restore (copy) them to a new SDcard if neccessary. So you don't even need that new SDcard (yet). Or go to the trouble (now) to make it a mirror image of your standard SDcard.

No, they are not all the same. They come in different write/read speeds and different qualities/durabilities. Those write/read speeds are more important for photo and video cameras.

Thank you so much for all that information and advice. It does make sense to just keep the back up on the computer.

I became confused over my "contacts" because I phoned Samsung before I posted here to ask them if I could export my contacts to SD card and still keep them on my Sim card, they said I would lose them from the sim and I don't want to do that.
Anyway, will go ahead and export them to SD card and then put on computer.
BTW, they (Samsung) told me I needed "keis" to do this with the computer, but is that necessary?, I don't think it's free. When I connected my phone to the computer the other day I could see all the files (except contacts), and I thought it was just a matter of highlighting and save to a folder, am I wrong?.
Thank you very much,

No. It's built-in in Android. For a hard USB cable connection just go to Settings > More... > USB Utilities, and follow instructions. For a wireless WiFi connection just go to Settings > More... > Tethering and portable hotspot > Portable WiFi hotspot.

I don't think it's free.
Kies is pre-installed on all Samsung devices afaik. I wouldn't be surprised if it's not possible to uninstall from an unrooted device.
I've got the "Kies air v2.1209051.apk for you if you want. Should be installable on your phone if it's not already there.
TBH, I don't use it. If I recall it just looked complicated and required some more registering (for which I'm allergic). And the other built-in m.o.'s work flawlessly so I don't need it. I just let it sit there, and ignore it.

No, you're right if by 'save to a folder' you also mean 'drag & drop'. Because that's the simplest way to do it.

BTW, your contacts are automatically backed up to Google's cloud, and associated with your Gmail account. If you set up another device, and log in/'register' (AARGHH!*&^#@) with your Gmail account all your contacts are downloaded and synced to that new device. So you don't need to worry about them.
You're now in Google's 'walled garden'... (in principle no different from Apple's 'business model'*; originally developed for IT mass markets by Micro$haft: DOS and Windows; now bested by both its sorcerer apprentices).

*a.k.a. the tricks of the trade, or how to tie your customer to your brand and squeeze him for what he's worth. That's how you become a billionaire.

Thanks again for helping me.
I did see Keis Air somewhere, but I think I will just do the USB thing like I did before when I connected the phone to the computer, then highlight and save so should be good to go. Gee I didn't know my contacts are saved in the cloud by Google:o. We live and learn.
Many thanks,
joanelaine.

Just to let you know that I was able to export my contacts to the SD card and also I've dragged and dropped everything into a folder which I've saved onto my computer in case I ever need the information. I followed your instructions about the USB on the phone and it worked, thank you again for helping me.

This does NOT happen automagically. It has to be set to do this, so please do not assume you have a backup there.

Just warning ....

They will not be deleted, the phone will create a backup to your memory card.

Yes you can directly copy all your data from computer to your spare memory cards, no apps will create any issue.

The contacts are backed up in a file of .vcf format, you will find it in your memory card.
