external SD card to go blank

Hello and welcome to Android Forums! 
If you have a phone with no internal data partition, then an SD card is required to save pictures. When the camera app is launched it looks for a place to save files and fails if it can't find one. All your pictures would have been on your SD card and if they are gone, your sd card is either missing or went bad. You could try reseating it (turn off phone, take it out and wipe off the contacts with a little alcohol on a cotton swab and then replace it). If that doesn't work, you may not be able to recover the card and will have to buy a new one.
