External SD card: what is the biggest file allowed?

What is the biggest file allowed to be stored on the external memory card or biggest size that can be read by the video player or any other apps?

Lets assume the card is formatted by the phone.

Cheers

Fat32 has a 4gb file size limit. If you have a Windows PC, you can format the SD card to exfat. The phone will recognize exfat, which does not have the 4gb limit.

exFAT has a 16GB limit

So I gather the Note 2 would only format it as FAT32, meanwhile a PC or a Mac OS can do exFAT and Note 2 could still read/write on it. I wonder why Note 2 would not format it as exFATby default? Stability or compatibility issues maybe?

More of a compatibility issue with older devices. exFAT is a newer format that is recently being recognized and the default file structure for SDXC cards. Not all devices will recognize the exFAT format. Though that may change in time.

Good question though I haven't had any problems yet, even with several full length blue ray quality movies in my phone.

If you have bought a 64Gb sdcard it will probably come formatted exFAT and should work straight away with files up to 16Gb. If you reformat with the GN2 it will go to FAT32 and 4Gb max file size! (so don't)

Mmm

Yes 1EiB = 2 power 60 bytes, rather big, so effectively no file size limit for exFAT. Sorry, I was mistaken.
