external speaker problem????

So I just traded my iPhone 4s for this sexy One X but now I'm peeved. Is this and issue with just this phone or is it just how this phone is???? The external speaker blows!!!!! With the phone sitting on a table or in my hand, wherever, I cannot hear the loud speaker. Pandora, music player, ringtones, anything. Volume is maxed out on all area( media, ringtone, alarms, etc). Sounds great through headphones( although not as loud as iPhone). Is this an issue with the HTC One X or just this particular phone???? I know my girlfriend had a Galaxy Nexus for awhile but got rid of it because the volume was too low but that was definitely an issue with the Nexus, not just her phone.
