Help extract pictures from .thumbnails ?

Lurker
I have a T-Mobile S3 running a Jellybean rom. Somehow I managed to delete all photos on the internal sdcard (DCIM folder, Instagram, Screenshots). Happened after swapping my 8GB to a 32GB external sdcard, not really sure how that happned. Have searched but seems like there is no way to restore them.

But inside the DCIM folder there is a ".thumbnails" folder with a 700MB file, I was thinking I can maybe extract something out of this file somehow? Anyone have any experience with this? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'm not sure what it is called but if you Google recover files you should find several options. I used one last year when my husband deleted prom pics off my sd card. If I can remember I will post. But I did find it via google

I have used file recovery software before but since the internal sdcard only supports Media Transfer Protocol (MTP), I couldn't come up with anything that works.

No yoiu'll not find anything that works on the internal sd card.

Problem with thumbnails is that they are just that. Thumbnails. You can take one and enlarge it but dont expect any quality from it. It only works at thumbnail size.

Unfortunately you're about out of luck for restoring your photos.

Moving forward can I recommend using your external SD card if you have one? if you do (or if you dont) Can I also recommend this:

FolderSync

If you have a network drive or a computer that is always on or even dropbox or other cloud storage account, you can backup whichever folders on your SD card you want on whatever schedule you want (Only on WiFi and power too if desired)

Thej only thing you cant do with the free version is exclude things so if you wanted to backup all your SD card except the music folder, you either need the pro version or to set up every other folder individually. I think pro is worth it though.

I'm sorry that I can't help you restore your photos but hopefully I can help prevent it in the future

Thank you for clearing that up. As soon as i realized they were gone i knew i should have synced them somewhere haha, I'll look into those options you mentioned.

Yea I do have an sdcard, I was storing pictures to it initially but when I started using the jellybean ROM, it began storing internally and there was no option to have them to save to external sdcard like ICS.

Yea I thought the thumbnails would be just that, very pixelated but if I can still have at least that, I would be happy at this point. Do you know a way I can maybe extract pictures from that file?

Thanks again for the help !
