Extreme Tech Pans Ice Cream

Horrible article. And I like Extreme Tech. "November or December"? Everything points to November 3rd. That is only 2 weeks away. His comments about source being needed for roms is not true. There is already a video of a Galaxy S2 running ICS (rom). Saying we won't see major traction for a year or so is false as well. Most if not all mid-high end tablets and phones will release with ICS. Remember, There are tons of Droid 1 and DX 1 users out there that have been waiting to upgrade. I can't comment on other carriers, because I mostly watch VZW phones, but there is a large upgrade base ready for the Prime.

I thought it was a reasonable article and got things about right - mostly anyway. But the title is kinda inflammatory and misleading. It implies ICS is bad but the main point of the article is ICS is not an instant fix for all Android's problems.

Outside of the misleading title, it actually is spot on.

Yes, ICS is being released in a few weeks. No, it won't instantly change the landscape of Android. It will, however, set a new baseline of where Google would like handset manufacturers to move to. And the thing about Cyanogen Mod was that CM8 (or is it 9 because Honeycomb was supposed to be 8?) would help older devices that are not supported by their manufacturers get ICS to reduce the fragmentation issue.

However, I fully expect that the cheap chinese knock offs will continue to dilute the Android OS by installing Eclair and Froyo, like they have been.

Yeah, I agree with a lot of what the article says ... especially the bit about Android needing to generate hype.

While serious Android followers are likely to be excited about the ICS announcement tomorrow, it's much less likely that it will make a strong impression on the public at large -- unless there's some new killer feature that the press decides to swoon over. And though we don't know, of course, there's no strong indication that that will happen.

Whatever one thinks about iOS and Siri, there's no doubt that releasing Siri was brilliant from a marketing perspective ... it generated a ton of largely-positive additional media attention for the new iPhone, which in turn certainly translated into added sales. Without something as attention-grabbing as Siri, it's hard to see how the ICS announcement will compete.

It’s fun to anticipate but I doubt it will ever make it to my Optimus S in one piece. After reading endless complaints about Gingerbread misbehaving on this phone, to the point that Sprint had to release an uninstall app, I tricked it into never gingering mine. I may end up doing the same with ICS...
