Help Facebook 1.8 update - syncing contacts is broken

Hi all,

Has anybody else installed the latest update to Facebook from the market (version 1.8)? On the whole I am pleased with the update, looks like they are finally taking the app seriously (although Push notifications STILL don't work - why is this?! iPhone users get notified if somebody comments, likes etc but they can't even get it working for us Android folk?)

However, with contact syncing, something strange is going on and I hope somebody can offer a suggestion.

A few months back in an effort to be more organised I removed all of my contacts stored physically on my phone and instead just uploaded the vCard file into Google's contacts section, then let the phone sync my Google account and show all my contacts in the phonebook from there. I then went through any contacts which I also have on Facebook and used the "Join" function which worked well.

However since installing the new update the other day, it doesn't work - it looked like I had lost all the synced details/pictures on my contacts and so I tried to "join" them, but it doesn't come up with anything when I do so. To make matters more confusing, some of the contacts who I do have on both my phone and FB have their FB status underneath them in the phonebook - but not a contact photo from FB. Also, some have appeared in the last day or two with their picture from FB without me doing anything. But the majority are still blank. I don't understand why this would be happening??

Has anybody else had this?

Has anybody else had this?

Open Contacts. In the top left there is an icon that is like 3 users. Click that.

It will open View Contact and allow you to filter.

This is where you need to make some changes.

Uncheck both boxes. Especially the 2nd. Or else it will only show contacts when they are online (connected through facebook)

Click under the options below and select or deselect any contacts you want or don't want.

If you aren't getting things sync'd. Open Settings->Accounts and Sync and make sure in here you have your facebook account and make sure that it is set to Sync.

After that. What problems are you still having?

What version of Android are you using? If you are using 2.1 push updates from facebook are supposedly, not supported.

Hi thanks for your response.

I looked in those options (the button with 3 people on it) and the top 2 are already de-selected and also I have only set it to show my Google Phone contacts from my Google account. This is the way it has always been, and it always used to give me the Facebook options to join the contact when I long pressed on them and pressed "join"

For example, say I had John Smith in my Google phone book and John Smith on Facebook, if I long press and choose Join on the contact, it would previously list John Smith on Facebook and allow me to link the the two.

Now, I don't get anything to do with Facebook when I click Join, it's just the Google contacts.

And like I said, it's weird because gradually more and more of my contacts who I have both on my phone and my Facebook are now showing up (eg - with picture, status, etc) but most have nothing and I can't join them.

As for Push, I am running 2.3.3 and I was sure Push should work on 2.2 and above?

Cheers

If you open Settings->Accounts and Sync you have a gmail account and a facebook account listed.

If you click into the facebook one, you do have Facebook Contacts selected?

Facebook should push. I don't use it.

There are apps that do push as well. One that isn't on the store, but can be installed if you are allowed to install apps from Unknown Sources. The app is called Pushee

All the contacts you have listed....they for sure have been imported onto the phone and into your gmail account?

You could also try and install an app called AirDroid on the phone. Then connect to your phone on your browser on the computer. And open your list of contacts on your phone from your computer. Then you can see any groups you have created and edit some of the data...

I don't know.

Maybe just start over. This time. Sync your contacts online and import them from online and don't use that vCard option. I don't trust it.
