Facebook App and Messages

I am admittedly a FB novice, but I can't seem to figure out how to read or send FB messages on the Android FB app. If I play around long enough, I seem to stumble back to FB in the browser where I can send msgs...but I can't believe the app doesn't have messaging functionality.

from what I've read it is impossible to send actual messages on the facebook app. Apparently FB itself does not support this (although the iphone app has no problems).

It doesn't but you can use Ebuddy (and others) for all your IM accounts including facebook.
