SOLVED.
It turns out the "Facebook for MyTouch" application built into the phone uses a Facebook application called "HTC Sense" in order to read and write your Facebook information. I had locked my Facebook account down so that new (to me) Facebook applications couldn't just give themselves permission to access my account, and this was keeping the "HTC Sense" application from being able to do its job.
If you are having the same problem, here's how I changed my settings:
On the Facebook web site...
- At the top right of the page, click "Account"
- On the menu, select "Privacy Settings"
- At the lower left, below "Applications and Websites", click the "Edit your settings" link.
- In the "Applications you use" section, click on the words "Turn on" where it says "Turn on platform applications.
On the phone...
- Settings
- Accounts & sync
- Add account
- Facebook for myTouch
- Enter your email address and password
It will take a few minutes for the phone to sync your contacts from Facebook. If you go back to the Privacy Settings page in the browser (or refresh, if your browser is still sitting at that page) you will see an application called "HTC Sense" on the list.
You may want to get into the habit of checking this page in your Facebook settings every so often, just to make sure that no applications have managed to add themselves to your list without your permission.
Also, as the phone syncs in your Facebook contacts, it will try to match them with the existing contacts in your phone. You may want to go through your contact list and make sure it linked everything correctly.
