Facebook for HTC sense missing one friend

Packdog

Lurker
This has been posted in other forums, but it has yet to be answered so I think I will try a different approach:

Problem: "Facebook for HTC sense" (or "sense") does not contain one of my friends from my facebook account (all others are present). The account is properly linked, updates normally, and this particular friend has been a facebook friend for a long time now. I've tried log out/in of "sense" from the phone and have deleted the app account from facebook website and every combination of the two as well as many other attempts including un-friend/re-friend this person. As a side note, if someone tells me to do a factory reset for this i will mock them for their utter stupidity from now until eternity...

Theory: the server is pushing corrupted data to the phone OR the phone is mis-reading some critical data which it then tosses out as corrupt.

I want to, using some alternative method, log in as my HTC sense program and see what data is being pushed. perhaps i can find an illegal character or some other reason the phone refuses to display this one contact.

Or, has anyone cracked the facebook for HTC sense app and actually investigated how it accesses the contact list? What information does it look for and how does it "link" contacts.

I'm sure there is a very simple answer to this problem, however, i bet it is simply buried and no one cares to look...

OK, so I've figured something out and decided it's worth a post.

In gmail, in the top left corner just under the gmail logo, click on "contacts." This will have the list of all of your contacts from your phone. If you open a contact who is linked to your facebook account you will see, in the right, a big old text box with the code "<HTCData><Facebook>id:XXXXXXXXX/friendof:YYYYYYYY</Facebook></HTCData>". X being the userid number of your friend, Y being you.

My thought is that you can plug this code into the text box of an unrecognized Facebook friend and get the contact to properly sync up. I say this is my thought because the one contact which I had troubles with, recently started working without any explanation (probably an update).

To find the facebook id: open facebook and travel to the friend's page. Now pull up the source code and do a search for "alt=\" (no quotes) the first or second one that shows up should be followed by the name of your friend and preceded by AAAAAAA_userid_BBBBB_n.jpg . copy the userid number and insert it into the Google contacts code and you should be all set.

If anyone tries this with a problematic contact, please report back!

I'll give this a try probably tomorrow evening. Thanks for the tip. Do you know if it resolves issues with other Facebook-like apps like FriendCaster? It seems FriendCaster and FriendStream are missing the exact same contacts.

How do you pull up the source code? I go to the friend's page, but there is nothing that indicates how to do that.

For IE8 (similar for other versions, I'm sure) go to the "Page" menu then down to "view source."

For Firefox, hit ctrl + u. Or open the "fire fox" orange box in the top left corner, go to web developer then click view page source

I'll give that a try on IE8 then. I was using Chrome and could not find out where to view the source code.

Also having this issue, and stumbled across your post.

Just done the above to the one contact that was missing. Currently, no change, I'll give it a while and post back if it fixes.

FINALLY I KNEW HOW TO SOLVE THIS...
Actually WE knew it, me and my wife went crazy because suddenly out of no where she is no longer appearing in my HTC Desire (facebook for HTC sense) contacts!

I did everything you can think of even complete RESET for my phone!
But REJOICE Android HTC users, IT IS NOT YOUR FAULT.... or better say, it is NOT HTC's fault, it is because of the Privacy Settings of that friend in his/her facebook account.

He/She has activated the (Turn Off All Platform Apps) under Privacy Settings -> Apps and Websites -> Apps You Use !!!

Once the user changes their settings and you Sync, they will appear back again, but you have to re-link them.

Thank you! I really really hope it works. Haven't tried it yet (waiting for my friend to get online), but I have been going insane trying to fix this on my phone. I would have never figured this solution out myself :)

I find that I have this issue with anything other than the official Facebook app. Pulse, FriendStream, FriendCaster and other apps have this issue. I'm not about to ask all of my friends who are missing to change their privacy settings so that I can see them. I'm pretty much forced to use the Facebook app which sucks compared to all of the other apps that I have.
