Facebook Message Notifications

Redspooks

Newbie
Hi I really hope someone can help... as this is driving me nuts

I have a Samsung Galaxy Ace S5380 and I updated the Facebook app a few days ago and since then I keep getting notifications of messages coming through. I never had them before the update and I have tried every conceivable way I can find to turn these damned notifications off, both on my phone and from my Facebook Account on my computer.

I bet it is a simple solution, but it's beyond me....

TIA

Hello Redspooks. I stopped the notifications at the Facebook settings menu via my PC.

Settings--Applications--manage applications--Facebook--uncheck notifications

In Gingerbread and below:

Open Facebook and tap the icon beside your name and then scroll the list until a gear icon appears. Tap it and then go to 'app settings' and disable notifications there. Keep in mind this turns all of them off and not just specific ones

Are the Facebook app settings tweaked on your device?

If so, try clearing cache and data on that app in Application Manager, reboot and reconfigure the app then see how it goes.

No they aren't they are basic... I have cleared cache and I think this might have worked.

Like a few others who have made comments about this 'Scroll down to the very bottom of the list, where under "Advanced Notification Settings" you should see an option to uncheck "Ongoing notifications". (Some users report not seeing the setting, which we have yet to figure out the reason behind.)'

I'm one of the ones that doesn't have this setting... typical LOL

OK go to the Facebook app itself. Open the left menu that displays stuff like news feed, profile, search, etc and scroll down where you see a gear icon. tap that icon and a submenu appears with app settings and more. Click app settings and uncheck notifications

Thank you - have done that so fingers crossed it's worked, which I think it has together with removing cache [all 11.5mb]. :thumb:

They are Facebook notifications, specifically about private messages received, although I did have one notification about a post a 'friend' had made on her Timeline.

I'm not getting a notification through everytime that I have received a PM on Facebook. The notifications don't correlate to any particular person either.... For instance... 'Friend A' can send me 10 PMs and I will get notification for perhaps 2 or 3 of them.... same for different Friends. It's so random.

One other thing with I don't understand and perhaps someone can explain... on the phone I open Facebook and if I go to Account > App Settings > Notifications (which is set at inactive) - if I switch this to Active and scroll down to Messages to turn them off and remove the tick beside it... it says Messages (All notifications are off until 2:59PM) when I have done this before it's given various different times, all 7 hours ahead... what the hell is that all about?

I hate this bloody phone, nothing is simple on it. :argh:

If I were to uninstall the Facebook App and reinstall it, would it help?

I'd just uninstall the app and use the web browser to go to Facebook. The Android version of Facebook sucks anyway compared with its iOS brother. Everything is blown up and super stretched on a tablet. Don't hate the device or the operating system though. Hate the developer or the app

Do you mean through the web browser that I can get on my phone? Facebook is all I really use on my phone when I am out and about...

Thanks for your time Nick, it's really appreciated and I will delete the app. It will also free up a lot of the limited room of phone storage I have that won't save on SD card...

I deleted the app and used the browser version to access FB for all of 15 minutes, but had to succumb and reinstall the Facebook app. The size of the font was absolutely ridiculous and I almost needed a magnifying glass to read and send messages.

Hopefully, I might not have any glitches with this new install.

(Watch this space) :D

That's what pinch to zoom and landscape mode is for

Nick that didn't actually works for writing out messages even turning the phone sideway, it was impossible to see what I was typing, the keyboard size was fine but the box above where the message appears whilst you are typing must have been Font Size -10 - it was so small.

When I reinstalled it and scrolled down to Account > Notifications etc to turn everything off, it was totally different to before after the update, so I must have had a rogue update install. So far today, 8 hours since I have been up, not one notification has come up on my phone :)

Well the new install didn't change anything, still getting notifications. I can turn them off for the 7 hour period I mentioned before and that's it. What I have managed to do is turn the sound into a light 'plop' noise which is hardly discernible, so I can put up with that, although it annoys me that I can't turn it off permanently.

Guess that's as good as I am going to get. Facebook is changing loads of things lately, none for the good IMO.

Thanks for the suggestions :)
