I just noticed for the first time when clicking on the main menu button I notice icons of games I don't have but when I click them it takes me to Google play store to download them. Is this something that is new for Facebook to advertise or something worse going on?

Probably games that you have been invited to play by "friends". If you log into FB from a PC, you can remove them from the list.
