Root Factory Reset not working as expected

Hi, I'm confused about what actually happens when you reset your phone to factory settings. I removed the SD card and then did: Settings > Privacy > Factory data reset. When it came back on, it looked mostly like when I first got it except that the 'superuser' app was still installed (I had rooted my phone so I could unlock it). I then experimented by uninstalling a useless looking system app and repeated the factory reset - the app was not restored.

I had imagined that a factory reset was a bit like doing a restore on a windows PC - ie completely wipe the primary partition and then, using a backup copy on a hidden partition, restore the PC to the way it was when it came out of the shop. (I think this was the way things worked with my old windows mobile 6 phone).

Have I miss-understood what a factory reset is, or is there a 'harder' restore that I should use? What actually happens during a restore? Is there a hidden partition with a backup copy, or does it just delete some files?

I'm asking cos I want to understand more about Android, but also I want to mess about with my phone and would like to be able to recover it if I mess things up.

I moved your thread here to your device forum so other can help out.

A factory reset will wipe your data and apps and contacts etc and should bring you back to when you first flashed your rom (if you have done so)

The superuser app should be there if it came with your rom as a system app.

You should not lose root if you factory reset:)
Nowill that may not be true on all phones as I am not familiar with your device.
