Help Factory reset

I'm trying to reset a phone my aunt gave. I'm tired of using the iPhone 4! She tried putting her pattern in lock herself out. I've tried the power button with volume up volume down both together and nothing no boot signal comes up it's a beats htc please help

Recovery mode is volume down + power

You should power the device off and after that hold the volume down button the whole time while you press the power button

What brand phone?

On Samsungs, it is Volume UP, Home Key, Power Button held until it shows the recovery menu.

Volume Down puts it into Download mode.... you don't want that.
