Maybe just a tad too much torque

Too much? I'd say not enough torque was applied to the wheel lugs. Either way, that's an expensive failure.

Actually, I think the problem is that he left the OEM differential in there, and without positraction, all of the torque went left!
And then the wheel left! :D
 
With apologies for the FB link...this guy is just lucky there was deep snow to fall into and that he didn't fall on/into what he was using on the roof!!
