Family plan upgrade iphone5

no cigar

Lurker
Hey guys I am curious about upgrading one of my lines to an iPhone 5.

In July I upgraded my main line with unlimited data to a GSIII and was grandfathered in on my old style family plan + unlimited data on the main line. As of this month, the second line on my family plan is eligible for an upgrade/discount. Would I be able to use this upgrade/discount to get an iPhone 5 and simply activate it on my primary line without any implications to my plan?

Thanks guys!

If you use an available VZW upgrade subsidy your plan will be changed to family share plan.
If you wanna buy the iPhone 5 outright without subsidy then you'll keep the grandfathered plan

That is not true badrsj, existing customers are not forced to Share Everything plans with an upgrade. I just upgraded my wife's phone last week, and she is on the 2GB individual tiered plan. No changes required to any plans. The only thing for existing customers that changes, is you will lose unlimited if you use an upgrade on that line. But doing what the OP is suggesting, upgrading another line, then transfering the phone, is perfectly acceptable, and won't affect anything on his plan, or his unlimited data.

Now the wisdom in going from a GS3 to an iPhone 5, well I will leave that for another day :p

Something that just occured to me this morning:

The 2nd line is one for my mom who uses a feature phone and does not have a data plan. The only course of action I'm seeing is finding some way to add data, then somehow cancel it later on and re-activate the feature phone. Does verizon permit canceling only the data plan if a smartphone is no longer active on the account?

Yes. You could do this IIRC. Doesn't hurt to call and ask them.

Yep, I have done that twice. Data plans are features, not components of your line, and are easy to remove when you put a non-smartphone back on it.

Personally I think the GS3 is way ahead of the iPhone 5. My GNex is too.

Signal is better on the iPhone 5, battery life is better, iPhone wifi can sometimes be wonky. Screen is smaller on iPhone but the colors are more realistic. You are stuck in the Apple ecosystem - no jailbreak yet, unlock the S3 and you can do a lot more. I use my phone as a phone frequently, and for our area signal strength is important. I'll continue using the iPhone and when/if the MAXX HD makes it out may go back to Android. Overall the S3 is nice as long as you are in a good signal area.
