Fascinate or X

Dr. Polo

Newbie
Hello all! I'm new here and for my first post I would like advice on what new android device to purchase. I am a student so I will be primarily using the phone for texting, games and browsing the web. HDMI port is not a concern for me but firmware and support is. Having researched both and come to the conclusion that Samsung is among the worst at pushing out updates this has become a sticking point to my decision.

If both were equally supported I would get the fascinate but it is a very close tie. The build quality, screen size and internal memory in addition to the presence of 2.2 already have led me to doubt my decision.

I had heard about the possibility of rooting the Fascinate but I am by no means a hacker just a casual user. Would this rooting let me use 2.2 on the Fascinate? Would it slow the phone down? Is it worth it to void the warranty just to get Froyo? Please Help!

Ok Im a captivate user and I will say that 2.1 runs awesome on the galaxy S phones, and from what i ear 2.2 sucks on it. I am a techie guy but I also like my phone to work smoothly so as of now I went back to 2.1. so if you like the fascinate get it and enjoy the great phone that it is

It appears to me that there are some real differences between 2.1 and 2.2.
The complaints mainly come from people who are use to the way the OS runs and can't get use to the fact that it runs differently on 2.2.

For instance it seems that task killers while not necessary didn't hurt 2.1 as much as it does 2.2.
People think that the background programs running on 2.2 are eating their battery when if fact they aren't, so they install a task killer to kill the programs not knowing that many of them respawn. Therefore the task killer is always running killing the respawning processes which is what is actually killing their battery.

I could be wrong, but that's the theme I get from reading those that complain about the difference.

The X. I finally got tired of Samsung and flashed my Captivate to 2.2. It really is much better than 2.1. Unless you're going to root and flash 2.2 on the Fascinate, get the X.

PS Samsung intercept is getting a stable version of froyo now so I'm sure galaxy S phones are next

I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you. Samsung has a way of not living up to what the expectations might be. Froyo probably won't come to the Galaxy S phones until late January if anything.

personally, I feel the better hardware and UI of the fascinate far outweighs the con of being stuck on 2.1

-the screen is MUCH better looking.
-battery lasts me two full days of regular use (calls, web, a lot of texting) and I leave it on overnight as well even when its not on the charger.
-touchwiz is very smooth and sleek looking, and I like its layout
-I think the shape of the X is unattractive

but these points aside, samsung has a bad reputation for not updating their devices, and motorola is quite the opposite, usually one the first brands to get updates. so if its a really big deal to have the newest version of android, maybe the X fits you better

but most of these points are opinions, and everyone has their own! i say go play with them both in a store and see for yourself

Thank you for the help everyone! I plan on visiting the Verizon store later today. On rooting, how difficult is it? I have been trying to jailbreak my ipod touch 3g 8gb (ios 4.1) and have been having difficulty reverting it, how difficult is rooting compared to that?

Having had an iPhone that I repeatedly jailbroke, I found rooting to be much easier. HOWEVER, rooting itself from my understanding can't mess up your phone. But if you start to tinker with system files that you shouldn't, then that's where the problems start. Flashing ROMs on to the phone was a bit challenging. But there are a ton of YouTube videos that show you step by step procedure. And watching those thoroughly before flashing really helps as well.

Now as far as reverting, I have absolutely no clue how to actually do it, and I hope I never have to find out. But I know there is soft brick and hard brick. Soft brick is recoverable through some software, but hard brick requires tinkering with hardware physically (please correct me if I'm wrong). But usually, if you follow the directions correctly laid out by developers then you should be fine.

edit. oh and good luck on your decision :)
