Help Fast Battery Drain when on standby mode

Mango101

Lurker
I've been having this problem ever since I bought the S2 two weeks ago. When I charge the phone for 2 -3 hours, the phone's battery always reaches 100%. But when I unplug the charger, usually before I go to bed, and just put the phone on standby mode, the next morning, the battery is at 20%. I don't keep Wi-fi, GPS, or Bluetooth on when I don't use them. And I don't want to switch off my phone each night, in case I get a call. I actually hardly use my phone for apps, or games, or using the internet. I spend about 10 minutes on messaging, and 10 minutes on calls each day, and that's it.
I thought the battery drained cause of the screen brightness, so I adjusted the screen brightness to a low level, and I've also made my Wallpaper to a still image, but it hasn't made much of a difference.
What should I do? I'm new to Android. Should I return it?

Does sound like a problem and something is preventing the phone from sleeping. First, can you post a screenshot of your battery usage? Both the detail graph and what is using the battery.

Second, try getting BetterBatteryStats. It can show partial wakelogs which is usually the problem. That can prevent the phone from falling asleep.

Third, try rebooting the phone. Sometimes that stops the rogue apps from giving the problem.

Fourth, a lot of app is syncing and updating in the background which also keeps phone from sleeping properly. I suggest off the data when not using it. Long press power button and a shortcut for on/off data will be available. Or just set up widgets/shortcuts to do all this on the homescreen.

Cheers

Sorry for the last reply Russel Ng. I've been a little busy, so I haven't had time to visit this site.
I tried everything you said today, but it still didn't work. Over the past week, the battery keeps draining at an alarming rate. For example, if I leave the phone on standby mode for about 8 hours, and the battery drains by about 70%!
For two days, the battery was working good. If I were to leave the battery on standby for 10 hours, it only discharged by 5%, but now the problem is back. I have kept a low brightness, no live wallpapers, very few widgets on home screen (although I do keep watsapp and accuweather app on my home screen).
I've rebooted it twice a day. I even did a Factory data reset, but nothing worked. :(
I usually make sure I don't have any active apps when I'm not using the phone.
I hardly use my phone. Like over the course of 8 hours, I spend 10 minute on calls, 10 minutes texting, and 5 minutes playing a game called Ninjump.
I don't know how to post a screenshot of my usage, but this is where my phone uses the battery power over the course of 24 hours (since I reset my phone yesterday.

*Display - 39%
*Cell Standby - 17%
*Android System - 16%
*Android OS - 9%
*Android Core Apps - 4% (what are these?)
*Mediaserver - 4%
*Phone Idle - 3%
*Dialer - 3%
*NinJump - 3%
*Voice Calls - 3%

Same happened with my SGS2 . I jusr removed battery and reinserted. Try this. It may help u...

Thanks for the advice Rajcutebz143. I'll try this. :)

To take screenshot, press Power+Home Button at same time.

If you tap on the battery graph, you should be able to see the bar for "awake" and "screen on". Preferably both bars should match as close as possible. If it doesn't then its something called wakelogs which keeps the phone from sleeping.

To tell what is preventing deep sleep, an app called BetterBatteryStats can check for you. A little hard to read, but just need to see partial wakelogs and see what's keeping the phone up.

After that, can decide what to do. If its an app, its easy to uninstall. If its a core process, will have to figure out a little more.

For the battery removal, that does not solve underlying app problems. Rebooting could do the same. However, removing the battery allows for calibration of the battery if you do this....
1) Charge the phone to 100%.
2) Remove battery and leave it out for 20s or so to make sure everything in the phone is discharged.
3) Replace the battery and see if its at 100%. If not, repeat.

Finally, if everything is still a problem, get it replaced. My battery last a day with emails on, 30minutes calls, 30minutes games (those addictive social games), etc... And on standby with data off, its about the same 5% every 10 hours. This is on 2.3.6

Cheers

Sorry to drag-up an old thread, but I'm having a similar issue. Recently had the battery changed under warranty and am convinced all is not good.

With the battery at 100p/c when I went to bed at midnight, at 7am this morning it was down to 46p/c. Is this normal? Samsung say 620hrs in standby but I'm not getting anything like that much.

Same advice. Check if there are wakelogs. Have a look at the battery graph and compare screen on with phone awake. Then get BetterBatteryStats to see if you can identify any rogue apps or processes.

Take note that some people expect the phone to last for days. Its a smartphone with a large screen. It won't last as long as older types of phones.

cell standby 69% 5 days 10 hours 46 minutes
Display 17%
Android System 5%
Phone Idle 2%
Android OS 2%

how can I reduce my standby discharging and how can I reset my standby time?
:confused::confused::confused:

I am not sure if you are typing it right, but if the phone uses 65% on Standby for a use of 5 DAYS, I say you actually don't have any problem whatsoever. Not many people can get the S2 to last that long.

Otherwise, maybe the battery stats just wasn't refreshed properly and somehow collected the Standby usage from previous charges. My suggestion is to recalibrate the battery. Charge it to full, remove the battery, wait awhile then put it back in again. Repeat if battery is not at 100%.

After that, just test and see if you have any more issues.

I seem to see high cell standby percentages when I'm in a low 3G or poor overall signal area. If that's the case for you, the phone is using a lot of power searching for a better signal, which drains the battery quite fast. Like Russell says, if you are actually getting 5 days of usage, then you really shouldn't worry, as you're getting very good battery life from your S2.
