Root Fastboot and Bootloader

Ok, so I have a couple of questions:

1st, What is fast boot, and why is so bad for our phone (the Optimus M, that is)? I got into it some how a few weeks back and was able to get out thanks to the help of this forum. I was searching around, and it seems that for other phones it's a good and helpful thing to have. It is possible death (or at least a coma) for the Optimus M.

2nd, I'm running CM7 (reppards version) and when I long press the power button to get the options presented there, if I select reboot, I'm presented with 3 more options: reboot, recovery, and bootloader. What is bootloader? I've been hesitant to select that option for fear of bricking my phone.

Fastboot isnt actually bad for your phone.. sorta.. it depnds.. if you ahve a custom recovery and rom, and something messes up, and you find urself in fastboot mode, its very simple to flash a recovery image and restore a backup and be right back where you were, however if you are on stock rom, you will ahve to start from scratch.. still useful, because you can flash a recovery, and then procede to flash a rom, but you will no longer be on stock.

bootloader is kinda the same thing, it loads before the operating system, and can allow you to hcange various things.. thats a broad definition, when i had my ascend.. i beleive i had to boot into bootloader to root it, but it may have been to flash the recovery image.. cant remember exactly been a while
