faster firmware updates after unlock?

I am in the market for a new phone but being in canada phones of the factory unlocked variety are often very old or very expensive or both. I made a thread about the moto G lte a few days ago and realized the only way to get a decent price on it is to buy it outright on a carrier like fido and unlock it. However I have noticed that carriers often put their own bloatware on devices and delay their firmware updates. Right now I am torn between the moto G LTE and the Sony xperia M. The xperia M is offered on prepaid and is sold where I get groceries whereas the G LTE Is... well god only knows in canada.

My question is, after unlocking will an android phone get updates faster direct from the manufacturer or will I still have to wait for instance for fido or bell or whoever to update even after an unlock?

Nope. Unlocking will not change the source of updates. Your phone is identified via its IMEI code which the manifacturer knows is a carrier bound unit, so they won't push updates to it whether you unlock it or not.

I am hearing of other people flashing stock roms that are not influenced by carriers onto carrier phones after they are unlocked. Like flashing the stock sony rom from a uncarrier influenced phone but never heard of anyone doing it with the xperia M. Anyone know if that will work or will it mess up the phone?
