faster internet

can anybody tell me the best way to speed up dsl internet that realy works i have tried diffrent progams i found on the net but they just seem to make it slower

If its general browsing that's the issue, yeah getting FireFox and tweaking it may yield results. However it may just be high contention or slow dsl. Nothing will solve that.

What results does speedtest.net give?

now im up to 5.02 mbps i was only at 1.2 and called the internet company and the replaced my modem so i am doin good now thanks everybody
and by the way i downloaded firefox and that helped out alot

If you want faster speeds one thing to do is to install a Linux distro like Ubuntu. Your antivirus on widows slows your connection down in order to scan everything going in and out.

Linux vs Windows vs Mac in regards to internet speeds are no better than each other. Its your ISP pacakage you have to upgrade or change ISP altogether.

You sir are wrong I regret to inform you. not really sure where u got your information but Linux and Mac does not utilize antivirus software that scans everything in and out thus speeding up your connection. Try this disable your antivirus temporarily and run a speedtest.

Distance to your local exchange also is a factor.

As are hardware specs, to a degree, try cat 6 shielded cabling to reduce interference from other equipment also.

I'm not sure where you got your information, but neither does Windows. ;)

ok im gonna try and defend my position the nicest way possible. IF you have a antivirus program on your computer your internet speeds WILL be slower than of you didnt have it installed. your av scans everything in and out thus slowing down your connection speed. i can prove it: run a speed test in windows with an av then disable your av and run a second test. i will put money on the fact that your speeds will be better without that antivirus protection. linux on the other hand and mac DOES NOT NEED av protection so they will be faster than windows. unless of course for some stupid reason you dont feel it necessary to have av software installed on windows...

Yes, AV can slow down a connection, but I have no idea where you get the idea that MACs and Linux don't need any or that they are safe from virii.

There are even cross platform worms that run on both windows and Linux.. I believe nimda did, as well as code red maybe?

The way i see it every element of every web page gets cashed to the hard drive as various files.

Some av's scan these files as soon as the file is created, but heres the key, the the file has to be complete, written to disk, meaning the download is done. So the strain is in theory not on the actual connection, more so on the process of scanning the file after download.

So no, av's don't directly slow down a connection, they slow down the system processes that deal with all new incoming/outgoing data, so it's more of a hardware issue.

However an un optimised MTU value could definitely slow down the data transfer rate.

xplosive... actually, some AV products have IDS components. These active monitor the connection and look for things it doesn't like. That will have a great effect on how fast your connection feels.

Please PM me for my address so that I can accept your money. ;)

There is no difference whatsoever between my throughput with or without AV enabled. And before you ask, yes my AV package, like most others, scans all vulnerable files in real-time.... but it can only do that once the file has downloaded, so has no impact on download speed. The 134MB .zip archive I just downloaded came down the pipe at the same 1.8Mbps regardless of whether AV was enabled or not then was scanned.

linux on the other hand and mac DOES NOT NEED av protection so they will be faster than windows.

I suggest that you visit a few security advisory blogs. Linux and Mac OS are not immune to virus or malware attacks. If anything the arrogant assumption that Windows is the only vulnerable OS makes them more liable to infection/attack.

Quite simply, you cant analyse a packet before its recieved no matter what os your running. It'll hit your firewall first, then get received, written, either to disk or the av's sandbox, then scanned. You cant scan data in motion up the line. So no, av's dont slow the connection, they slow the pc's resources to analyse the received packet data.

It's true, simply because many virus writers can't be bothered to write for Linux or mac, doesn't mean they cant.

Fact is a Linux or mac virus will never take down a government or bank so most malicious stuff is aimed at windows for chaos and financial gain. But for the script kids who just want to cause a little anarchy "because they can" we Linux people should be careful. More fool any Linux person who has already been lured into a false sense of security...

Contact your internet provider or change your location like if your workings place is under ground you will face the connection issue then move to the upper floors.

True, but it will be scanned before your system is allowed to feed it to the web browser. Your right, the speed it comes in doesnt change, the speed at which it is available to you can be effected though. And yes, you can analyse a packet before it gets written. It goes into memory before it hits the HD. Take a look at packet sniffers.. they aren't writing to the disk.
