Faulty USB port

MT269

Lurker
The USB post on my one and a half year old LG K8 phone has became faulty unfortunately. It still charges, but it won't enable file transfers from my PC to the phone.

What I'm referring to is the screen that brings up file transfers on the home screen, and connects it to a PC.

I regular transferred items from the PC to the phone before this started occurring, and need to find a way to perform this.

What I could try is uploading them to somewhere on the internet and downloading them, but I am unsure as to how to get them to the specific folder I want them in. I don't want to replace the phone yet, as it is only about 25-50% through it's operational life.

And to make things more of a nuisance, dropbox.com fails to load on my phone. It always gets to about 85%, then hangs indefinitely.

But I personally find this to be an inconvenience, and would like to know if it still possible to get files in the folder I intend to have them placed in. Is there way to fix available for a faulty USB socket? I am not an expert on smart phones admittedly. It is extremely inconvenient not being able to transfer them.

Send yourself emails with attachments from your phone to your emails, then log in on your computer to download them.
Any phone repair shop should be able to fix for cheap

How sure are you that it's the USB port that's bad? Cables go bad, too. And, with later versions of Android, "Charge Only" mode is not only the default but it has to be changed to MTP mode EVERY time you plug it in, not just the first time. If this problem started after an update, then I'd try plugging in the phone to your PC and then pulling down the notification bar and seeing if USB options is set to MTP mode.

I would also reboot both my phone and PC and use a different USB port on your PC to make it reload the drivers.

If all else fails and you can't get it connected, you could try AirDroid int "lite" mode (works over WiFi, no account needed)

It's supposedly version 5.0. It doesn't bring up anything at all when I connect it. The only alert that is present is DNS66 running. I just tried Airdroid, but it seemed to be more trouble than what it was worth, especially with a 200MB per month limit. I'm not paying to use software just because a port is stuffed on the phone.

How much would it cost to have it fixed in South Australia? Does anyone know? And where on earth do I go?

I swapped the cables over, and there seems to be signs of life again after several days. Although this wasn't long after I removed the sim and memory cards and rebooted the phone.

But you're not doing what @lunatic59 suggested, you're instead using the pay-for option. I've been using AirDroid for years now, never once signed up for an AirDroid account, and often exceed 200MB on a daily basis, never mind monthly. Use the app to do file transfers directly over your home LAN, don't sign up for an AirDroid online account unless you have the need for its online storage feature.
