Fav app for jogging?

use "Ultrachron Lite" to track your time per lap and "CardioTrainer" to record it by GPS. You can even add notes to CardioTrainer for your split laps.

Nice thinking outside the box! You're right that could pretty much work. It's a bit ugly though: there's no way to start the clocks in both programs at the same time but for some reason CardioTrainer has a countdown (I've been using Runtastic and it has one too--what's up with that? Is it to give it time to lock the GPS?) so you can start that then switch to Ultrachron Lite and when you get the notification that CardioTrainer (or Runtastic or whatever) has started you can start the Ultrachron stopwatch and you should be within a couple of tenths of a second. Similarly, there's no way to stop the clock on both programs at once so what you have to do to is stop Ultrachron Lite at the point of the final lap (that is, with 1 lap remaining) then switch over to CardioTrainer (or Runtastic or whatever) and stop it at the finish and then figure out the final split by subtracting Ultrachron Lite's final time from the running program's total time.

Sure would be nice--and a whole lot easier--to have a simple "lap" button in one of the running programs though!

I would suggest you try emailing a couple of the devs to see if they are willing to put the 'lap' feature on their apps. Some devs are very willing to include new requested features to their app. This is especially true if it's a good idea that they didn't realize :)

Like most of you I've been trying them all. So far I've sampled Jog Tracker, CardioTrainer, Endomondo, RunStar free, Runkeeper and Sports Tracker.

After a few weeks using the programs over and over I threw a few out. The jog Tracker app is just too simple and the website is also lacking. RunStar has a nice clean app which is easy to read, but is lacking many metrics while running. You can't upload anything to the web without the paid version, which is a big turnoff, so that's out as well. CardioTrainer IS a very robust app and even counts steps. One reason I'm taking it off the list is that the website doesn't really give you much and is very weak compared to the others. The other reason is I found CardioTrainer to be the least accurate out of the Android training apps. It seems to overstate the distance and I see that also mentioned in many other reviews and message boards, so it's not just me seeing things :-)

The final cut came to Runkeeper, Endomondo and SportsTracker. I'm throwing out Runkeeper today. It has many features I like. The app interface is clean, the GPS indicator is visible, shows splits, has audio feedback and a nice clean website with lots of social aspects. I'm taking it off today because it might be one of the less stable apps and tends to crash every so often (as also seen in other reviews). Also, while the website is nice, something about it makes it look less appealing that the two apps that made my final cut.

So...final cut is Endomondo vs Sports Tracker and I'm still kicking the tires of both. Endomondo has a clean interface to the app, LOVE the ability to choose which boxes (data) you want displayed, splits on the app, pace AND speed, easy to read numbers, visible GPS and a GREAT web interface, with splits AND laptimes on the map. Also a feature that shows you your best time stretches and highlights it on the map. Endomondo might also have the best social features and shared tracks in your area.

Sports Tracker is also a strong contender with the most fully featured app, while also being the most easy to read while working out with big crisp numbers. No need to decide which live measure you want displayed since this app displays ALL of them! It is the only app i've seen so far that shows a live shot on once screen of current pace, avg pace, last mile pace and fastest pace. One press turns those to current speed, avg speed, last mile speed and fastest speed. Those are eight good data points that are all available easily and live. A huge bonus. Sports Tracker is also the only app I've seen that displays updated splits on the app while you run AND the ability to create your own lap splits with an easily displayed "lap" button. Like a few others, a music button is included to take you to your music app while staying in the program. Even cooler, they have a camera button in the app that takes you to the camera app while still in the program and allows you to take pics on your workout and incorporate them into the journal for your own saving or sharing with other users/friends. Sports tracker also has a very solid website which has tons of data, nice map, can even go fullscreen. I'm guessing when I'm all said and done, SportsTracker will win "best app" in a landslide, Endomondo will win best social and sharing, and they'll tie on the website features.

So.. there's my 2-cents (or 4-cents) any other opinions out there between all these services?

^--Really nice overview of all the big jogging apps :)

I only tried two before I settled with one. I'm not as hard core with finding the perfect one as you. Though it seems the one I'm sticking with is in your top 2 ;)

I agree that Jog Tracker is just TOO basic (for the free app). I'm using Edomodo right now, and I don't know if you noticed, but there's an issue with the way it cacluates the distance. It is always 100m below the actual distance for every run. I've emailed the dev on this but have never heard back :(

Thanks! I edited and added a little more about Sports Tracker. I wasn't aware some were having problems with Endomondo and distance. I've turned on all the apps and headed out in my car on a known course and compared them to my odometer. They are both just about dead on every time I test them. Out of the ones I dismissed, Jog Tracker tended to understate the distance and CardioTrainer WAY overstated it every time out.

Love the feedback in this thread and looking forward to see if anyone else chimes in with their impression on all the choices we seem to have these days.

Someone else noted the Edomondo's 100m issue in this thread and you can find comments on the market about it. That was when I realized that it was true.

How I saw it was that running around the block = 1km. I decided to run for 2KM. First km, I was told the 1k mark when I got to my house. One the 2nd KM, I was told when I was done 100m before my house -_-;;; I don't think it's cumulative of understating 100m for every km but the last km is understated by 100m

Sportstracker is a paid app right for all of those features?

Another few runs in with these apps and they each have their own pros and cons. Hope to see some other recent feedback on these. Sports Tracker is a REALLY polished product and is by far the most fully featured, but it seems to run a bit fast/far compared to the others. In a bunch of test runs against the others it always comes out further in distance and quicker in pace. Hate to say it, but it may have accuracy issues. Endomondo and RunKeeper always end up with about the same distance, pace and speed so they seem pretty accurate. Just wish they'd have some of the features found in Sports Tracker like more data on the main screen, bigger numbers, manual lap, integrated music/photos and on and on.

I have never heard of Noom. How is it different and better than the other app?

Its not just a jogging app but a total "weight loss app". It has 3 tabs: Exercise, Weight, Food.

For exercise tab

For jogging, which it also does most of what Sport Tracker does like saving your route, posting on FB, step counting, it also counts calories burned (estimate). However apart from that, you can also input any exercise you might have done (choose from pre-defined activities, or make your own). For example I play basketball usually Fridays. I can choose "indoor team sports" for my activity and how long I did it, and it counts calories. Basically, the exercise tab=sports tracker.

For food tab

You input your info and it calculates how much calories you have to intake for the day based on your weight and how much weight you want to keep. Also takes into account your lifestyle (sedentary, active, etc). You log in what you eat per meal and it shows you how much calories you have taken in. It also shows you your eating pattern.

For weight tab

pretty straight forward, it puts out your progress in losing or gaining weight in a chart form. You log in your weight every week.

There are also notifications/reminders during mealtimes and weekly for weight in case you forget.

Noom is the weight loss/nutrition component of CardioTrainer. This thread was for apps to use WHILE jogging, so I was leaving apps like Noom and LoseIt! out. However since it was brought up, since I threw out CardioTrainer as a choice (accuracy issues and bad website) I also deleted Noom. It wasn't that fully featured anyway compared to something like LoseIt! which has a million more features for logging workouts after the fact, logging nutrition, setting goals, seeing data reports/graphs and an AWESOME user community. LoseIt! aslso has FitBit and Withings scale integration.

I know a lot like the Worksmart Labs family of apps (CardioTrainer/Noom/Calorific/RaceMyself/Calorific) but I find them to be a little on the "cutesy" side and not much for data/accuracy under the hood when you peel back the gimmics.

I just want ONE that does it all and it seems like it will be a further update to one of these apps. Either SportsTracker gets more accurate or Endomondo adds a little more data to the app screen or RunTracker gets a slightly better website. Can't we just merge the best of all? :)

Noom is part of CardioTrainer? I thought it was the other way around. I use Noom while jogging because, well it had that functionality as well. It has accuracy issues for you? Hmm, maybe I'll try Sport Tracker again, and see if the update has made it better for Android. Never noticed any difference before on my device.

They are both part of Worksmart Labs. They all look like they tie together on your phone, but you have to have them all installed individually.

CardioTrainer WAY overstates my distance on most runs. If I run like 5-6 apps all at the same time and stop at the same time then CardioTrainer ALWAYS comes out as the furthest traveled. SportsTracker is next in overstating distance. It always seems to be a bout .03 to .10 of a mile further than the norm. Then the other apps (Endomondo, RunKeeper, JogTracker, Google MyTracks, Runstar) all end up about the same, so they're all pretty accurate. Some state that Endomondo tends to understate distance, but I haven't found that to be the case in about 15-20 trials.

Anyway..off to bed..5K in the morning..with RunKeeper if anyone is wondering LOL

Ok. I'll try running both apps at the same time on my next run. Sport Tracker on my 5800 is pretty much accurate, so I'll try running them against that.

runkeeper works great for me. I am doing the C25K. With runkeeper you can enter a "coaching" workout which lets you add intervals by time or distance, and add a cool down and warm up to it. So for each week of the program I create a workout and it gives me audio cues when to run and when to walk. Then when I log into the website it will tell me my times/pace/speed for each interval. Love it.

I've been using Endomondo for three walking sessions. The first time it marked 8.4km, the second time 10.6km and the third time 11.2km. The thing is, all three times I made the same exact route/circuit, and it keeps going up and up.

To see how much it changed, I decided to export the circuit into a .gpx file and open it with Google Earth; to my surprise, all three excercises clock in at around 8.2km, so it keeps giving me bigger and bigger distance. I don't know what to think of it, really.

I was referring to the one by Sportstracking technologies. I've been using that app on my Nokia's when they were still the best phone company.

Endomondo pro was on sale for 10 cents yesterday at the Market. Splurged a dime and compared it with RunKeeper which I have been using for over 6 months. Distance, time and GPS accuracy seem to be very close.

The UI is nicer on Endomondo (it just looks brighter and fresher and the website seems to have more details even though both provide the same basic information). The lap and split times in the Endomondo workout summary is also a nice feature. And it is easier to remove old workout times from phone in Endomondo without uninstalling or losing data from the website.

However, I think I still prefer RunKeeper. The biggest difference for me is the audio cues. Endomondo only cues every kilometer. In Runkeeper, I can customize the cues by distance and/or time. And the Runkeeper audio cue voice is clearer and more pleasant. I find the audio cues to be a big motivation to keep up my pace. In the RunKeeper map, I can also zoom in on the map details while I can not do so in Endomondo. In Runkeeper, I can input my own calories if I use a piece of gym equipment (also Endo does not list elliptical machine). Runkeeper takes up slightly less memory space and in head to head comparison, seems to use less battery power (I use Power Tutor to compare them while running at the same time).

Great comparison funpig. You can zoom in the map with Endomodo but you need to 'unlock' the map screen.

Is there an app that can separate running from walking? I can't consistently run for the entire route and would like an app that shows how much actually jogging I do.
