Does anyone know how to actually make this work... I get some of my contacts to sync and the others don't... I don't understand

Try out Facebook contact Sync or HaxSync from the Play Store. I think the second option is only for ICS. I have personally used HaxSync and it does exactly what it says it does. It is a hassle having to use 3rd party apps to sync contacts though.

Do they have the exact same names on Facebook and your Contacts? Because if not you have to manually merge them.

Yea for a large majority they do

Go to menu>settings>accounts and sync. Open the FB account you have there. Uncheck and recheck sync contacts.

The issue with that is it throws all of my friends on my phone....

Go to contacts>menu>display options>uncheck Facebook. The Facebook data for your friends in your contacts will still be there, but you won't see any Facebook contact that is not associated with a Google or Phone contact.
