bionic.jpg

Guess this answers the question of scree size.

Description:

This equipment is a Digital CDMA800/1900 portable transceiver. It employs EVDO data transissions in the networks and contains 2.4 GHz Bluetooth and WiFi functions (part 15.247). This unit also operates in LTE Band 13, 700 MHz. It is connected to a computer via a USB connection. (Part 15B). The WCDMA/GSM network functions have been disabled by the firmware and are SIM locked by all US operators on this product.

Note:

This device also contains functions that are not operational in the U.S. territories. This filing is only applicable for US operations.

Does this mean that it is a global phone?

I think global VZW devices with LTE are not until next year, when micro LTE is more common and 28nm for the radio.

But the book says it is global.

Either way, I may just have to get this phone. Once I see the benchmarks of course.

Oh who are we kidding? We're all going to get this stupid thing...I just hope I don't get screwed.

Edit: I forgot about the Stratosphere...if that releases the same day and is, in fact, the SGSII with lte, I don't think I'll get the Bionic.

I personally think that the Bionic's design is better than Samsung's. I love industrial design. My only problem with the SGS2 is that it's an older phone now (yes, not new to the US), and still has the WVGA screen. We are seeing new phones release with qHD, and many rumored phones with 720p resolutions.

Benchmark Shmenchmark ... I WANT THE FREAKIN' THING!!! :p

Stenchmark? You might need some of this...

Interesting to me is that nobody is talking about the Qualcomm chipset MDM5600 or MDM6600 (hard to tell) that by looking at the specs is NOT LTE capable. Begs the question what chip did Motorola use for LTE band 13 if it isn't qualcomm? Anyone?

One of the reasons it took so long to release the Bionic is that Motorola developed their own LTE chipset to work with their phones.

They did this mainly so they could lease it to the other manufacturers.

I don't know about that. The phone just came out in April, and I think the specs are just as good as the Bionic. Reviews have been outstanding.

Also, (and I know it's arguable), but it's a common opinion that the Super AMOLED Plus screen is more vibrant and clear than the qHD screen. Especially with pixelation in some circumstances.

Although I think that the qHD is brighter and much easier to see in direct sunlight.

How is that separate LTE chipset gonna help battery life if they are still loading the device with Qualcomm's MDM for 1x/EvDO?
I really hope there is something extraordinary with this setup, otherwise it'll be a big flop.
I was hoping that at least the industrial engineers would pimp the phone up a bit, but it looks like 1999.
But again, it could be just my poor taste.

I'm not sure what will constitute a "flop" in your opinion, but I wouldn't have my hopes up too much. I'm expecting that the phone will be very fast on loading web pages, will have no noticeable lag or "ghosting" when transitioning between screens, and will be able to run a number of apps in the background (like Pandora, etc.) without slowing down the phone. But I also expect to live with this thing connected to a charger constantly. It's a toss up.

I agree. It's much too brick-like. I really liked the rounded-off design that was presented at CES, but I guess change is evil.

Oh I was just talking about the sales figure, but secretly hoping that we see battery life improvement over the existing LTE devices.
Looking at your expectations, ThunderBolt already does all that without any lag, I'm sure dual core would perform even faster if the third party apps are optimized for it, and if Moto doesn't choke the entire experience with "Blur".

Design-wise, seriously if I had to chose between Bionic and any other LTE phone, I wouldn't even look at Moto's product, let alone if Samsung GS2 had a similar LTE product.

I'm still curious to see the RF performance of that new Moto Shipset. :)

Yup. Sums it up.

If they release an SGSII with LTE, I know where I'm headed.

I looked at the User's Manual 1 Link and the section that describes how to load the battery looks to show the back of a droidX or a droidX2??....

The Droid 3 UI has no performance issues so not seeing how a device with more ram would. Size will probably be the main up front issue of discussion, since seemed big enough for folks to assume a 4.5" display, when the apparent reason for this device size is to make room for a bigger battery and the 45nm LTE radio. Probably a telescopic heat solution too (Must be some other reason for the large bezel). The front looks like the same dimentions in relation to display like the Droid 3, but a 4.3" display.

My lame guess is the two issues folks will latch on is size/weight and of course battery life, when in LTE mode. The bigger battery should help to offset the battery life.

Oh yeah, three I guess, since apparently the same display as the DX2. The self standard-referencing pentile haters will attack.

If you are going off the pics in the manual, you should note the phrase at the bottom.

"Your Smartphone might look a little different".

Well, if the Bionic ends up looking like the Photon (cool angled corners like something you'd see on Star Trek), okay, I'll be happy.

But if it looks like what it does in the tons of testing pictures from the FCC, I say it looks like my OG Droid on something. Not steroids, but maybe some B12 vitamins.

Not impressed.

On a different note, from the manual (page 16):

Cool down
In very limited circumstances, such as where your
phone has been exposed to extreme heat, “Cool
Down” message screens will appear. To avoid possible
damage to your battery and phone, you should follow
these instructions until the phone is within its
recommended temperature range. When your phone
is in “Cool Down” mode, only emergency calls can be
made.

Does this mean that once the battery starts overheating, which we know it will, it won't let you use the phone?

I think this has more to do if you leave it in the sun.

Hence the "exposed to extreme heat." I know that the battery on my phone heats up when I use it too much, but it's also a 3 year old enV Touch.

I don't imagine any more problems than other phones on the market.
