Root Fed up and wnat to relaod os on Droid X

harlanlax

Lurker
I have a Droid X running Android 2.3.4. The unit is unresponsive and frustrating to work with.

I have had the unit almost two years and will be getting a new phone shortly but feel if I wipe the unit and put back the os it will work better.

I don't care that much about rooting it but will if you think it makes sense. I really just want to wipe and reinstall the latest good os

I did not see 2.3.4 listed as an option can anyone point me to the easiest way to do what I want/

Thanks

Being stock, you are probably on the latest "official" release and would get nothing more than bug patches (if that). Wiping doesn't erase the OS, just resets it to out of the box state (like a system recovery with a PC except the OS updates stay).

While you don't necessarily care about rooting, you would have many more stable options for OS's. The custom roms will extend the life of your device as many (most) perform much better than stock and receive regular updates. You are already out of warranty, so that is not a concern.

I have loaded several on my D2 which has similar hardware. I checked the list available in the ATR sticky and see Gummy, CM7 & CM9, Liquid, and MIUI. These are pretty reliable roms across many devices. I think I am running Liquid on either my D1 or D2 and ran it on my GNex for a while too.

If you do decide to root, make sure the first thing you do is a nandroid backup. This will save you a lot of headaches if something goes wrong flashing roms. You will see instructions for how to do this in the root guide.

I used MotorolaOneClickRoot_psouza4' to root my phone now I would like to try the liquid rom.
Do you have a preferred method or tutorial on how to install that?

I'll try and find a good guide for you, as it is a little different phone to phone. Off the top of my head, get clockworkmod installed, boot into recovery, do a nandroid, wipe data, wipe cache, then flash the rom image.

The site is so slow ATM it may take me a bit. In the meantime, I will move this over to the All Things Root forum where other rooted X owners will see it and chime in.:)

So I was wrong even though it said it was rooted it wasn't. I then read a note about having to use a different method for droid x and os 2.3.4

I used Pete's Motorola Root Tool which after step 2 and reboot says it can't root.

Any thoughts?

Rooting is tricky as it is different device to device. I have finally gotten this moved to the ATR section.

I would check the sticky threads at the top of the page and see if any apply (there are a few different methods depending on .60x or something like that). Also, this is still a pretty active root section, so someone more familiar with the X will probably jump in and help.

Go into settings..then about phone..look and see what version you are on..if it ends in. 621...you will have to follow the flashing to 604 milestone..then rooting with Z4..there is a thread in here about it..if you have not taken .621 then the one click root should work if you followed the directions, but it sounds like you may have taken the ota update.

harlanlax, looks like you are in good hands. I am subscribed to the thread, so if I can help in any way, I'll still be around.:)

Thanks Droidxxxxx

Also make sure that you have USB debugging enabled and that your phone is in charge only mode when you're rooting it. That's only if you're not on 621.
