Root Few questions about Rooting

skidawgz

Lurker
I rooted and ROM'd my OG Droid a few times, so I am used to the "long method" of roots/ROM.

I have my Bionic now, and have left it untouched for months (:ashamed:)

1) Am I correct that I can just run an app that now roots the phone? seems like tehroot. This should root and make no changes to things such as my txt messages or login info?

2) Will I (after root) immediately be able to go and uninstall VZW apps?

3) Can I then immediately pick up the wired and wireless tether apps?

4) What is the best way to make an image of my phone, in case I want to revert to factory? Some version of Titanium backup? or something else?

Finally,
5) When updates are sent out for my phone will the phone update automatically, as it does now? Will the root hold

I am aware it is forum etiquette to read first, but there's a ton of info here.
Thanks for any help!

Welcome.
The Bionic is a little tougher to ROM etc. than the OG Droid because of the locked bootloader but still fairly easy.

1. Yes, tehroot should be your best bet for rooting

2. You can, but freezing apps (in TiBackup) instead of deleting is usually safer. Check this sticky http://androidforums.com/bionic-all-things-root/410336-safe-bloat-remove.html You don't have the same memory limitations with the Bionic that you did with the OG Driod so IMHO it's not necessary to delete apps.

3. Wired should work out of the box, even without root. Wireless takes a little more adjustment. Use at your own risk. ;)

4. After you root, get the Bionic Bootstrapper, reboot into Clockwork Recovery and make a full backup. Check the Bootstrap and CWR/nandroid sections of this post http://androidforums.com/bionic-all...-all-things-root-guide-updated-1-20-12-a.html Use TiBackup for individual apps and their data.

5. Hopefully yes, but we've only had one official widespread update so far. Nobody knows about future updates.

5) When updates are sent out for my phone will the phone update automatically, as it does now? Will the root hold

There's a method known as Forever Root that will maintain root privileges through an OTA update. However, if Moto/VZW decide to close this loophole in a future update, it may stop working. The instructions can be found on this page -- make sure you follow them to the letter (case matters, etc.).

[Edit: Just noticed that TehRoot includes a Forever Root tool so you can just use that -- it presumably does the same thing without you having to edit text files. Still worth checking out the link if you want to understand what it does.]

dont want to highjack the thread but is there a way to freeze apps without titanium pro?

In theory you could just back them up with the free version of TiBu and then delete them, but this has been known to cause problems and is not recommended. There's also an app from Team Black Hat that is cheaper than TiBu at $2.99 and is supposed to allow freezing, but I've never used it so proceed at your own risk. Personally I think TiBu is well worth the price for the unattended batch restore feature alone.

Thanks so much for the replies!

It is not my intention to ROM the Bionic, only root it. I only really care for a handful of changes. The Bionic is so quick I feel less of a need to ROM than I did with my OG Droid.
Plus I have a tablet now that Moto makes them too :)

One benefit of using a custom rom on the bionic is battery life improvement.
