Fictionwise eReader

Does any of you with AT&T know if Fictionwise's eReader software is available on the market (and if so, what it's called)?
I found it available directly from fictionwise, but it would require side-loading.
I've only had my HTC Inspire a week, and dont' feel like I know it well enough to root it just yet.

You don't need to be rooted to sideload an app. Just check "Unknown sources" in Settings/Applications, put the .apk file on your card, navigate to it with an Android file manager such as Astro, and tell it to install (most file managers will offer this option when you tap on the filename).

Or just remove the DRM from the book and convert it so it can be read with whichever app you like best. ;)

Download .ePub format eBooks from Fictionwise and install the Aldiko Book Reader app from market.

I don't see their app on the market, I would suggest moon+ reader, but there are loads of ebook readers available

Yeah. I'll check some of those out.

I just have a bunch of paid e-books at Fictionwise in the secure eReader .PDB format that I used to read on my Palm before my dog ate it.

The reader is available for Android... just not in the market.

Moon+ is not going to read that...the latest Aldiko handles some DRM formats but I'm not sure about Ereader .pdb (as opposed to Ereader .epub).

However, it's very easy to get the DRM off and convert them to something else (Google is your friend - so is Apprentice Alf. ;))

Your dog ate your Palm??

Yeah you will have some issues with DRM with most the ereader apps. You may want to try to contact fictionwise and see if they will push the app out on the Android market. Checked their site and it appears they are trying to support android but they may not be aware that some carriers, AT&T, do not allow side loading.

That's a good idea.

I'll try that.

Well, I'll give this to Fictionwise. They're certainly prompt.
I got a response in less than an hour!
Unfortunately, it wasn't what I wanted to hear.

"Hi,
There are no plans to make our eReader software available through the Android Market.
We apologize for the inconvenience.
Best Regards,
Linda

When I was researching smartphones, I kept seeing complaints about AT&T and "no side-loading". I dismissed these complaints thinking, "how often can that possibly come up?".
Well, for me so far, it's about once a week.
Guess I have some more homework to do.
I still think I'll wait for the new phone smell to fade a bit before rooting, though.

Root it. It's generally very easy to do (although it does vary from phone to phone). It also won't itself cause any issues with your phone. Those people that brick their phones are generally playing with custom ROMs (and also ignorant or even just stupid IMHO - there are plenty of safeguards and recovery methods available).

Don't be afraid, just research rooting on your phone and don't go into it totally ignorant.

Yeah I would have to agree rooting is generally safe and the benefits are worth it. Seems kind of backwards them not putting the app on the market. It appears they are missing a chance to make some money.

Thanks for the words of encouragement.

I'm a complete noob to smartphones in general, and Android specifically.
Also, I have the HTC Inspire which, by all accounts so far, isn't trivial to root.

I will definitely research the hell out of it before I attempt it.

Don't let the process to root scare you too much, there is a huge root community here. Research all you want and dont be afraid to ask questions. Once you feel comfortable go ahead and try it. The first time you root a phone it will seem scary however afterwards you forget why you were so worried. And if you have a wife that goes thru phones like mine by this time next year you will be able to root a phone in your sleep
