File Level Backup of Android OS Install?

Is there any way for me to get a file level backup of all of the files on the flash memory of an Android phone? I gather that the Android system encrypts many files so an ordinary user won't have access to these.

Can you install an SDK on a Windows PC and have some special access to the file system?

I want to do this because Amazon's MP3 player has for the second time now blown away 20+ hours of my work constructing playlists on the phone. Those were stored in flash on the phone not the SDCARD.

Not all files, but app data you should be able to back up. If you are not rooted then Helium (android 4+) should do it, or you can use "adb backup" from your PC.

Is there any method for getting an image level backup of the entire Android OS flash environment, including applications and data? Or do I need to manually need to list each and every folder and file and somehow develop a script to back those up individually? That's kind of horrific if yes....

To make an image backup you need a custom recovery. That's part of rooting the device.

On an unrooted device the answer is no. But the backup tools can do the scripting for you.
