Root Final queries before my first foray into custom ROMS!

Hi Everyone

OK, so I'm fed up with space limitations on my (unbranded) HTC Desire, running Gingerbread. Even with paring my apps down to a minimum, and moving as many as will allow to my 16GB Class 6 Micro SD card, I'm still often a victim of "Low on Space".

So time to try out a new ROM, I think. I've been trawling the wikis, forums, etc. and have a good idea of what to do, but wanted to just summarise my thinking here in the hope that people can help me to avoid obvious howlers, give me some good advice, etc.!

In preparation I've just succesfully rooted my phone using Revolutionary, done a Titanium Backup and a Nandroid too.

There's so many ROMs out there, but I'm leaning towards Cyanogenmod. Apps2SD seems to be what I'll need to solve my space problems once and for all. Google wise I need Gmail and Maps.

I don't mind losing most of the HTC Sense stuff, but I am quite fond of the home screen clock / weather widget. With NT Sense and Fancy Widgets Pro it looks like I can achieve that. I like the wallpaper and Flashlight too, but I've got the *.apk's for that.

So this is what I think my to-do list is, but I'm sure I'll have missed something!

  • Get latest radio and flash that
  • Backup SD card, re-format with 1GB Ext4 partition at the end, copy back to main FAT partition
  • Wipe phone
  • Install new ROM
  • Install Google Apps (can I choose exactly what I need and don't need?)

Any advice / tips much appreciated :)

Thanks

Rob

No need to touch radio.

Everything else looks fine. Cm doesn't come with a2sd though I think. You need to flash that too. Think they link it in their thread

OK thanks, I'll try and flash CM sometime this week then :)

Well, it worked, I am now running Cyanogenmod :)

Gonna take a while to get used to it, and get it how I want it. Looking good so far, though!

welcome and congrats on your new rom :)

whats it like? much like stock for look and feel?

im a redux style chap myself - i like the slightly stripped down feel....especially on dGB rom that im on now

but i use ADW launcher Ex instead of rom one and also Widget Locker instead of lock screen

cheers

Good so far, look and feel is quite akin to HTC but without the bloatware! At least the way I've set it up. It comes with ADW launcher.

I've got a new 32GB card that I'm going to install instead of my current 16GB card (more music on my phone!).

So my plan is to resize the partitiions, reflash CM7, and install Apps2SD+ with a partition on my new card.

Also, I've been looking into the partition size issue. I've seen suggestions that the best for CM7 is 130/5/302 (system/cache/data). My phone is currently 250/40/147, with used space as 133/1/131, i.e. CM7 already takes up more space than I've seen recommended.

Any ideas for system size that is future-proof for future CM7 releases?
Can I do the resizing using my existing Hboot setup (revolutionary / clockworkMOD), or do I need something else like Alpharev?

Thanks

Rob

OK so I've changed my partition sizes using the PB99IMG method, and QSE showing the resizing correctly. Big thanks to SURoot for those FAQs :)
