MetalGear

Lurker
So tomorrow I'll be walking into my local Verizon store to upgrade my phone. I've been with an iPhone as long as I can remember and the os has just gotten stale. I have an iPhone 5 and after the last few updates the phone is showing its age. I'm ready to make the jump to android, with that said my question is what is the best all android phone out now? S6? Nexus 6?

Depends what you want. There is no single phone which will be best for everyone. Have a look and a play and see what you like (which may not be what the salesperson is being told to promote).

Well, main difference is that if you buy a Nexus 6, expect to need to download third party apps to be able to do certain functions that say the S6 can out of the box, like the Smart Screen features (smart stay etc). Other than that, either phone would be a good choice.

Since part of the shift from Apple to Android is the ability to customize, consider the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge which lets you put apps on the edge.

if it were me:
* spending not more than 170 usd, probably importing from China
* rooting
* replace launcher
* install Root App Delete
* uninstall a bunch of spywere apps from both the phone manufacturer and Google itself
* install decent firewall
* take it from there

Someone who is new to android may not want to get into rooting straight away.

But more importantly, MetalGear is with Verizon, and as they are a CDMA network you need to register the phone with them rather than just stick a SIM in it. Most cheap Chinese handsets simply won't work with VZW at all, but even if they technically support the standards Verizon could simply refuse to connect them. So I wouldn't follow that route without checking with the carrier first.

But the "Smart Manager" is actually the version "Clean Master" that Samsung have included. So some of the carriers seem to have done their customers a favour (bizarre as that concept sounds!) by removing that ;).

Nexus 6 would be a good choice as it is powerful, and has no bloatware if you get it straight from google.

Good point. I forgot that your USA system is totally different.

rooting
I think it's a good idea to get into rooting straight away if you want to maintain any sort of privacy or control over the device you use and if you consider yourself a bit of a tinkerer who dislikes corporate spyware. I would not buy a non-rootable phone. I'd either buy one pre-rooted or make sure it can be easily done by myself or a friend, at least.

But again, very good point about the SIM thing..

The OP is new to Android and is also on Verizon. So would have to chose the phone very carefully, if rooting is a consideration. Most phones I know, where rooting is easy, supported by the manufacturer and a good community, does not void the warranty, and is difficult to go wrong, devices like Xiaomi, OnePlus or Oppo Find, they won't work with Verizon. Nexus 6 would probably be a good choice here, rather than a Samsung.
