Root Finally rooted

I'm a total freaking n00b with this... I'm pretty savy with a computer, and I even am comfortable using linux, but i've been a "this is how it came and I have to deal with it" kind of guy, but... I rooted my phone yesterday with teh revolutionary method.. it was cake, i have to admit.. i could have taught my 3 y.o. how to do it. I had installed skype a long time ago and had gotten teh "this won't work with your phone but we'll email you when it does notification." I never did get an email from skype, but i saw that it was supposed to work with out TBs now so I tried to install it again.. ran into that "insufficient storage space" issue even though I've got GBs of free space.. everything I saw online in regard to fixing it required root access.. i was kind of paranoid about screwing up the phone but this revolutionary method looked easy enough, it suer was. I fixed my Skype problem, but NOW i'm curious...


i've been looking at gingerbnread ROMs, and I'm like on the verge of following a youtube walkthrough on installing cyanogenmod's gingerbread release.. but here's my only reservation (that i can think of).. what about my camera? am I going to screw myself by by putting this ROM on here and end up with a laggy camera or worse?

really, I only use my phone to take pics, txt msg and phone calls, a little facebook and a lot of reddit..

should I just stick with what I have and wait for the OTA? like Ihad said, the ONLY reason I rooted was because of skype.. I like the idea of being in control of my own hardware, it's just NOT a deciding factor for me..


so.. now that I rooted.. what do I do?

the reason for rooting kinda is a puzzle to me, but i get your point.....

hmm i would suggest a new radio and start experimenting. some ROMS are kind to some phones, some aren't. the BAMF series is great! Gingeritis is great! Synergy is Great! they're all great in their own respect! hell CM is great. buuut the question is, will your device like it. find one, stick with it and enjoy!! i would start with BAMF. community fav (kinda) and friendly (when not talking about XDA). give them a try!

if youre happy where you are,you can stay there. i personally hate sense and prefer vanilla android,so i always run AOSP roms on my rooted phones.

one thing you keep in mind: if you have allowed revolutionary to install clockwork,you CANNOT accept an OTA. youll need to replace clockwork with the stock recovery,and when the OTA happens it will take away your rooted rom(but not your s-off) and youll have load a custom recovery and flash the root file if you want to become rooted again. i cant say enuff good things about revolutionary and their permanent s-off. after youve run revolutionary youll always be just a couple of steps away from being rooted,no matter what you do.

my personal recomendation would be to leave the custom recovery. it will allow you to test some other roms if youd like,and make backups of your current rom so you can go right back to it if you dont like what you try.

however,remember what i said in the paragraph above that ;) you cannot accept an OTA with clockwork recovery. but youre phone will try,if you dont pay attention. if you leave the custom recovery in place,you will have to pay attention to the forums so when its time for the OTA,you can flash a version of it in recovery in order to update. if your phone tries to apply an OTA with a custom recovery,it will result in a potentially un-recoverable bootloop. so dont do it.

if you like the idea of vanilla android,cm7 has a fully functional camera-it has almost no issues at this point,and youll prolly get better battery life as well. if you think you may like it give it a shot. just make sure you make a backup of your current setup prior to wiping and flashing cm7.

do some research and post up if you have any questions. :)
 
I've definitely come to love DroidTh3ory's ROMs.. Cl3anTh3ory is what I'm running and it is perfect right now.. On top of that, he's got a new release coming out very soon.

It's sense, so it will feel comfortable to a stock guy, but its built on gingerbread, so you'll get nice new features.

On top of that, check this out: (stock battery btw)

How much were you using your phone with those stats? I can get that too..... With minimal use. I'm constantly on my phone at work and can't seem to get more than 5 hours on a charge.
 
I loved sense but since using CM7 I think I love AOSP better. Now I'm on AOSP Shift 1.2 by DroidTheory. This rom is amazing! And the camera is great. I like taking pictures too and I like the AOSP camera better than the sense camera.

i think you are one of the few that do....lol

OP, if you are a picture taker, i would suggest staying away from aosp. i find that the sense camera takes better pictures. but i am sure there are apps out there that can get some pretty good pics if you really want an AOSP ROM.
 
I like the fact the aosp camera focuses right before taking the picture. With any sense camera I would have to wait for it to focus or tap the screen then tap the button to take the picture. My shaky hands would mess up so maybe its just me but I really like the aosp camera. :-)

Sober explanation.. I had uninstalled skype and then tried to re-install it later when i found out that it was "supposed" to work with our TBs now (which is kind of a joke right now).. but it would not install the second time and returned an "insufficient storage space" error even though I know for sure that there's plenty of room. On skype's own website they've been telling people for over a year that they have to root their phone in order to be able to delete some leftover file. Once I deleted that file I was able to install the app and (sort of) use it.

When you say that some roms aren't kind to some phones, do mean like different phones like different roms (i.e. inspire vs. TB)? or do you mean like my TB vs. like my neighbor's TB?

So.. my next question becomes... if I flash a 2.3 rom onto my TB.. will skype then use the front camera? cause it's pretty bogus that i can only use the back one with it.. and, honestly, Tango uses the front camera, so I don't really buy their "2.2 won't allow it" line. And, over a year? Really? Couldn't they have just updated their installer to delete that file for me?

My phone has issuses with running OMGB based AOSP roms while other phones run them no problem. Roms are phone specific i.e. a rom for the bolt will not run properly on the evo and vice versa.

I don't use skype so I can't answer the question about the FFC, I think it works on some sense roms if you install the correct version of skype, not sure about AOSP roms.

God. Thank you for this. I somehow had interpreted something I read somewhere to mean that I could accept the OTA, and that revolutionary would just be able to deal with it.. but it's that I let it install clockwork that keeps me from being able to do that. I'm fixing this problem asap.

That day was quite a bit of usage, but not intensive things, like gaming, etc. You can see the big dip towards the end of the battery-- that was navigating for about 20 miles and sneaking in a few pictures of the edge of the hurricane clouds.

What I've done: disabled 4G, backed way off on the sync intervals, 802 radio, ShiftS3ns3 1.3.. Also, rebooting in the morning seems to make the battery live for forever.

it is a little confusing. an OTA needs to have the stock recovery install it. clockwork will try,but fail,wich results in the bootlooping. all the cases ive seen of clockwork trying to apply the OTA were recovered,but i did read of one instance where the person claimed to have never gotten his phone recovered. there maybe was another issue,but i feel its better safe than sorry... DO NOT ACCEPT AN OTA IF YOU HAVE A CUSTOM RECOVERY INSTALLED. :)

if you rooted with revolutionary,you can accept OTAs if you reinstall the stock recovery. assuming youre on firmware 1.13.605.7(mr1) and your pone is trying to OTA to mr2,you can download the mr1 recovery from the sticky thread http://androidforums.com/thunderbolt-all-things-root/399960-radios-recoveries-hboot.html above and install it in hboot. your phone will then accept and apply the OTA. the new firmware will break your root,so after the OTA completes itself,youll need to reinstall whatever recovery youre using now(prolly clockwork-check the version number before doing this) in hboot,then flash superuser in recovery to root the new firmware.

Can I assume that installing a custom rom will block from even getting an OTA request?
Are there any other ways to not even get the OTA request.

yes. i custom rom will have the updater script disabled(at least it should ;)) if you want to stay stock and not have updates,check out this thread: http://androidforums.com/thunderbol...ionary-stock-mr1-question-about-recovery.html

there is a file you can rename,and/or you can possible alter the softwares fingerprint.
